Embraer delivers first two A-29 Super Tucanos to Uruguayan Air Force

Embraer has delivered the first two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU), marking a significant milestone in Uruguay’s long-awaited fleet modernisation programme.

The handover, announced on February 18, 2026, forms part of a contract signed in late 2024 that also includes mission systems, integrated logistics support and a flight simulator. The new turboprop light attack aircraft will strengthen the FAU’s capabilities in airspace control, border protection and broader national security missions.

Embraer described the delivery as a continuation of a partnership spanning more than 50 years, noting that Uruguay was the first international customer to acquire an Embraer aircraft. FAU leadership characterised the induction of the Super Tucano as a historic operational and technological leap for the country’s combat fleet.

The A-29 is widely regarded as the global benchmark in the light attack and advanced trainer segment. Selected by 22 air forces and logging more than 600,000 flight hours worldwide, the platform is designed for multi-role flexibility, including advanced pilot training, close air support (CAS), intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), air interdiction, border surveillance and counter-drone operations.

Equipped with modern avionics, advanced human-machine interface systems and precision weapons integration, the Super Tucano can operate from unpaved or austere runways with minimal infrastructure. Its relatively low operating and life-cycle costs, combined with high availability rates, have made it a popular choice for air forces seeking cost-effective airpower solutions.

With the arrival of the first two aircraft, Uruguay positions itself among regional operators fielding a proven, combat-capable platform tailored to 21st-century missions.
