American teen pilot Ethan Guo, 19, has been detained by Chilean authorities after an unauthorised landing on King George Island (TNM) in Antarctica, disrupting his quest to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents.
Guo, who has already flown to six continents in his Cessna 182Q Skylane (reg. N182WT) to raise $1 million for cancer research, submitted a flight plan from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia, Argentina, but instead diverted mid-air to Teniente Marsh Airport in Antarctica on June 28.
Chilean aviation authorities say he failed to properly notify them, triggering emergency search protocols. Officials also claim Guo violated airspace rules and the Antarctic Treaty, while a Chilean court has ordered him to remain in the country during an investigation that could last up to 90 days.
Guo’s lawyer argues the diversion was for safety due to “in-flight complications,” but weather data doesn’t support severe conditions at the time. Guo posted on social media that he’s safe and will provide updates.
