RAAF becomes first international customer for Increment 3 Block 2 modifications

Australia’s 13th P-8A Poseidon arrives at RAAF base Edinburgh, South Australia

Boeing has announced a major step forward in Australia’s maritime patrol and anti-submarine capabilities, with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) becoming the first global customer to receive Increment 3 Block 2 upgrades for its P-8A Poseidon fleet. The milestone coincides with the delivery of the RAAF’s 13th Poseidon aircraft, further strengthening Australia’s long-range surveillance and defence capacity.

The four-year upgrade programme will equip the P-8As with new antennas, sensors, and advanced software, enhancing computer processing and communication systems to detect and track even the most sophisticated submarines.

“These upgrades, together with the delivery of the 13th P-8A, mark two important advancements for Australia’s defence of its vast coastline,” said Naomi Smith, Director of Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) Sustainment Operations. “Increment 3 Block 2 will deliver next-generation detection and targeting for aircrews, while the newest aircraft strengthens fleet readiness and operational reach.”

The first two RAAF P-8As will be upgraded by Boeing at its Jacksonville maintenance and overhaul facility in Florida — the first international aircraft to undergo modification there. The remaining aircraft will be upgraded by Boeing Defence Australia at its Deeper Maintenance & Modification Facility near RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.

Australia’s 14th and final P-8A Poseidon is scheduled for delivery in 2026, completing the fleet and marking a key milestone in the nation’s ongoing investment in maritime security and allied interoperability.
