Boeing has retired its last 787-8 flight test aircraft, ZA004, marking the end of a nearly 16-year programme that helped define the operational standards of the 787 Dreamliner family.
The aircraft completed its final flight on February 11, 2026, departing Boeing Field in Seattle for long-term storage at Pinal Airpark in Arizona. Using its original callsign, “Boeing 004,” the jet closed a chapter that began with its entry into the flight test programme in February 2010.
Over its career, ZA004 flew more than 670 test missions, accumulating over 2,250 flight hours and visiting more than 30 airports worldwide. The aircraft played a central role in validating performance, safety and maintenance benchmarks that now underpin the global 787 fleet.
Among its key contributions:
Boeing said the retirement decision was driven by cost considerations as the aircraft approached major maintenance thresholds, reflecting the maturity of the 787 programme.
Although no longer flying, ZA004 will continue contributing to development efforts. Components will be used for training, research and spare parts support through Boeing Global Services, ensuring the aircraft’s legacy lives on across the active Dreamliner fleet.
For Boeing’s engineering and flight test teams, ZA004 represents more than a prototype—it is a foundational aircraft whose data and validation work shaped every 787 delivered to airlines worldwide.
