Boeing, Lufthansa Group and Rolls-Royce have partnered to flight-test new technologies designed to improve aircraft fuel efficiency and reduce community noise as part of Boeing’s 2026 ecoDemonstrator Explorer programme.
The flight tests, which begin later this month in Glasgow, Montana, will use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The aircraft is scheduled to be delivered to Lufthansa after the test campaign, which will run until mid-August.
The programme will evaluate a Next Generation engine inlet, featuring a shorter, lighter design with advanced acoustic treatments to reduce drag, weight and noise while enabling integration of more efficient future engines. The partners will also test Intelligent Operations flight paths, using data-driven departure and arrival procedures to optimise fuel burn and minimise aircraft noise around airports.
The research forms part of Phase III of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) programme, which supports the development of technologies to improve aircraft efficiency and environmental performance.
Since its launch in 2012, Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator programme has tested more than 260 new technologies in operational conditions, accelerating the development of innovations aimed at reducing fuel consumption, emissions and noise while improving operational efficiency.
