Boeing has announced another setback for its flagship 777X wide-body jet, now postponed until 2027, triggering $5 billion in late-delivery penalties. The delay stems from ongoing regulatory challenges, adding to years of turbulence for the U.S. planemaker.

The 777X, designed to succeed Boeing’s 747 and 777 models with improved efficiency and passenger comfort, has already accumulated nearly $15 billion in total programme charges. Despite the delays, CEO Kelly Ortberg said the aircraft continues to perform “well in flight testing” and reaffirmed Boeing’s focus on “restoring trust” and stabilising operations.

The announcement comes amid a rebound in global air travel and as Boeing struggles with safety concerns, production issues, and labour disputes, including major strikes in 2023 and 2024.

Boeing reported a 30% year-on-year revenue increase to $23.27 billion in the quarter to September, with 55 aircraft delivered. The company expects the long-delayed 777X to eventually boost cash flow and reaffirm its competitive edge, touting it as “the most efficient and reliable jet in its class.”
