Boeing invests $1 billion to create fourth 737 MAX assembly line in Everett, Washington

Boeing is investing $1 billion to establish a new 737 MAX final assembly line at its Everett, Washington, facility, expanding production capacity to meet strong global demand and reduce its backlog of more than 4,300 outstanding orders.

The new “North Line” becomes the fourth active final assembly line for the 737 MAX programme and will support Boeing’s goal of increasing production to 52 aircraft per month. The move also adds greater resilience to the manufacturer’s production system.

Unlike Boeing’s existing 737 assembly operations in Renton, wings will continue to be manufactured there before being transported to Everett for final assembly. Each aircraft will spend around 10 days on the new production line, where mechanics will complete tasks ranging from wiring and engine installation to cabin fitting and final inspections.

Located in the world’s largest building by volume, the Everett plant has traditionally produced widebody aircraft including the 777, 767 and KC-46A Pegasus. Boeing said the new line will initially ramp up gradually before reaching full production, with the flexibility to build both standard airline aircraft and specialised VIP configurations.

The investment marks another step in Boeing’s efforts to increase output as airlines continue to place strong demand for the 737 MAX family.
