ATR has been selected by the EU’s Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking to lead two major projects that will pave the way for low-emission regional flight. By 2030, ATR will operate the world’s first hybrid-electric regional aircraft, using an ATR 72-600 test bed.
Key projects include:
- HERACLES – developing an ultra-efficient hybrid-electric regional aircraft concept, combining advanced batteries with a thermal engine compatible with 100% SAF.
- DEMETRA – flight-testing hybrid-electric propulsion and electrified systems on an ATR 72-600 demonstrator.
Partners include Safran, Collins Aerospace, and Pratt & Whitney Canada.
ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said this marks a bold commitment to sustainable regional aviation, reinforcing ATR’s legacy of fuel efficiency.
These initiatives support Clean Aviation’s goal of 30% better fuel efficiency and lower emissions, targeting next-generation regional aircraft entry into service by 2035, in line with the European Green Deal and Fit for 55 climate objectives.
