Air Algérie has placed a significant order for 16 new ATR 72-600 aircraft and an ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator, marking the largest ATR order ever from an African airline. Deliveries will take place between 2026 and 2028.
The new aircraft will serve Domestic Airlines, a new regional subsidiary of Air Algérie, aimed at improving connectivity within Algeria, especially to underserved southern regions. The fleet will feature latest-generation PW127XT engines, enhancing fuel efficiency and sustainability.
Air Algérie, a partner of ATR since 2003, currently operates 12 ATR 72-500s and 3 ATR 72-600s. This order supports both the airline’s carbon reduction goals and commitment to regional development.
A new ATR 72-600 simulator—the first in Africa—will be installed in the airline’s training centre to enhance pilot training and safety.
ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude praised the move as a “powerful endorsement” of the aircraft’s performance and value, especially in low-density, remote routes.
This order reaffirms ATR’s leadership in regional aviation across Africa and strengthens a 20+ year partnership between the two companies.
