The French Navy is set to enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities as the launch operator for the new Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) version of the Aliaca uncrewed aerial system (UAS).

Ordered by the French Directorate General of Armament (DGA) from Airbus Helicopters (via its subsidiary Survey Copter), this new configuration marks a significant tactical upgrade to the existing “SMDM” (Onboard Mini Aerial Drone Systems) currently in service.

Versatility Without the Footprint

The primary advantage of the new Aliaca VTOL is its ability to operate without traditional launch-and-recovery equipment (such as catapults or nets).

  • Hybrid Design: The drone features four propellers for vertical lift, while transitioning to fixed-wing propulsion for efficient forward flight.

  • Logistical Ease: By removing heavy launch hardware, the system allows for faster deployment and a significantly smaller footprint on deck.

  • Seamless Transition: Operators will use the same proven ground stations already in use for the fixed-wing version, ensuring a smooth training curve.

Operational Rollout

Since 2022, the French Navy has utilised the Aliaca as “remote binoculars” for overseas patrol vessels and surveillance frigates. The VTOL version will expand this reach:

  • Timeline: Qualification trials begin in early 2026, with the first deliveries scheduled for May 2026.

  • Total Order: The DGA has ordered a total of 34 Aliaca systems since 2022.

  • Mission Profiles: Beyond tactical situational awareness and coastal surveillance, the system is increasingly used for Search and Rescue (SAR) missions and combating illegal maritime activities.

While the VTOL version represents the future of the fleet, the original fixed-wing SMDM units will remain operational on equipped vessels for at least the next seven years, ensuring a robust and tiered aerial surveillance network.
