Airbus Helicopters has unveiled two next-generation rotorcraft concepts in response to NATO’s Next Generation Rotorcraft Capabilities (NGRC) study, aiming to deliver a future medium multi-role platform that balances speed, affordability and operational effectiveness.

The proposal—developed in partnership with Collins Aerospace, Raytheon and MBDA—features:

  • A high-performance conventional helicopter

  • A high-speed compound rotorcraft concept

Both designs emphasise modularity, simplicity and long-term affordability through a Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) approach. Airbus says the two platforms would share common systems, maintenance procedures, training frameworks and weapons integration to maximise fleet complementarity and lifecycle efficiency.

The compound concept builds on Airbus’ high-speed demonstrator heritage, including the Airbus X3 and Airbus Racer. The configuration—featuring wings and lateral propellers—enables significantly higher cruise speeds than conventional helicopters while expanding the flight envelope with rapid acceleration, climb and descent capabilities. Flight evaluations under Europe’s Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies programme have validated these performance gains.

The NGRC initiative, led by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, awarded Airbus Helicopters a concept study contract in July 2024 to explore the design and development of a future medium multi-role helicopter.

Airbus positions the dual-concept strategy as a way to ensure European industry can offer NATO partners a scalable, interoperable and future-proof rotorcraft solution, incorporating advanced connectivity, cybersecurity, crewed–uncrewed teaming, survivability enhancements and multi-domain combat integration.
