Airbus Defence and Space has been awarded a framework contract worth up to €50 million by the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) to integrate artificial intelligence across a wide range of military information, communication, cybersecurity and weapons systems used by the French armed forces. The agreement spans systems delivered by both Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters.

The initiative is closely coordinated with the Ministerial Agency for Defence AI (AMIAD), created in May 2024 to help France build sovereign capabilities in military artificial intelligence and reduce strategic dependence on foreign technologies. The contract supports the Ministry of the Armed Forces’ broader AI strategy, which seeks to expand operational applications of AI while ensuring national control over critical systems.

The first implementation phase will focus on enhancing Spationav, France’s maritime surveillance system. AI components will automate the fusion of surveillance data from satellites with Spationav’s own sensor inputs, strengthening situational awareness and accelerating decision-making for naval operations.

Further AI applications are under evaluation or development in intelligence, cybersecurity and connectivity. These include real-time decision support for managing and optimising military telecommunications networks.

The DGA highlights that the exponential growth of sensor-derived data—originating from satellites, radars, drones, smartphones and social networks—makes AI essential for rapid processing, triage and exploitation. AI is expected both to accelerate tasks already performed by personnel and to execute missions that exceed human capabilities due to data volume or operational urgency. A parallel priority is the establishment of robust data storage, archiving and structuring infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale AI systems.
