Airbus is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact by renewing its transatlantic fleet of chartered vessels used to transport aircraft subassemblies.

Airbus has partnered with shipowner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs to build three modern, low-emission roll-on/roll-off vessels with wind-assisted propulsion, set to enter service from 2026. The new fleet aims to reduce transatlantic CO2 emissions from 68,000 to 33,000 tonnes annually by 2030.

These efforts align with Airbus’ commitment to cut its industrial emissions by up to 63% by the end of the decade, following the 1.5°C pathway of the Paris Agreement. The vessels will use wind-assisted propulsion, dual-fuel engines, and routing software to optimise their environmental efficiency.

This initiative also supports Airbus’ plan to increase A320 family production rates and improve sustainability across its operations.
