The Indonesian Ministry of Defence has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, marking a major step forward in the nation’s air mobility and defence modernisation efforts.
The handover ceremony was held at Halim Air Force Base in Jakarta, following the aircraft’s delivery from Airbus’s final assembly line in Seville, Spain. Indonesia becomes the tenth operator of the A400M. A second aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
“Today we welcome Indonesia as the tenth operator of the A400M,” said Karl-Heinz Grossman, Head of International at Airbus Defence and Space. “This delivery demonstrates the aircraft’s unique versatility and its ability to operate effectively across Indonesia’s geographically complex environment.”
The A400M will be operated by the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) and configured for multiple roles including cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, and humanitarian missions. Capable of carrying up to 37 tonnes of payload, the aircraft can fly 2,400 nautical miles with a 30-tonne load—enough to cover the entire Indonesian archipelago from Jakarta.
Airbus will also provide training and support services to ensure a smooth introduction into service.
In a forward-looking move, Indonesia will explore the integration of Airbus’s new modular firefighting kit, enabling the aircraft to be rapidly converted into an aerial water bomber carrying up to 20,000 litres of water or retardant. This capability could significantly strengthen Indonesia’s wildfire response capacity in remote or hard-to-access regions.
Designed for operational flexibility, the A400M can take off and land on short or unpaved runways and can also perform aerial refuelling missions, serving as a force multiplier for Indonesia’s growing air mobility fleet.
