Retired Airbus A340 destroyed by fire at Turkish aviation centre

Share

A retired Airbus A340 was severely damaged by fire on Saturday after flames broke out aboard the aircraft at an aviation and science centre in Çayrova, near Istanbul.

The fire broke out on September 5 at around 15:00 local time at the UçakPark Aviation Science Centre in Kocaeli province. Firefighters and police were dispatched to the site as flames spread through the aircraft.

The blaze eventually engulfed a large part of the four-engine widebody aircraft. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, although the A340 suffered extensive damage and crews continued cooling the aircraft after the flames had been extinguished.

During the firefighting operation, the aircraft’s tail section broke away and fell onto a fire truck. Despite the dramatic incident, no injuries were reported.

The Airbus A340 had been retired from commercial service and was being used as the centrepiece of the UçakPark aviation and science attraction. The aircraft was transported to Çayrova in 2018, reportedly arriving in sections on 14 trucks before being reassembled at the site.

Working for 25 years in the aviation industry, I changed my career and became a firefighter/EMT in 2021. I like to spend my free time with my two sons, girlfriend, family and friends. I love to travel, wine and dine and support my favourite football squad KV Mechelen. Once an Ironman 70.3 finisher and dreaming of completing a full distance.
