Spain’s historic luxury hospitality scene welcomes back a legend: the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, has reopened after a five-decade hiatus. Originally inaugurated in 1890 as Spain’s first grand luxury hotel, it quickly became a magnet for Europe’s elite, hosting figures such as King Alfonso XIII and author Agatha Christie. After 1975, the building operated solely as a casino, which closed in 2006, leaving the iconic neoclassical property vacant—until now.
Heritage Meets Modern Luxury
The extensive restoration preserves the hotel’s historical grandeur while integrating modern five-star comforts. The monumental facades, majestic staircases, and ornate salons have been meticulously refurbished. Inside, 199 rooms and suites blend classic elegance with contemporary design, featuring natural materials, soft tones, and large windows that showcase the Atlantic Ocean and Tenerife’s volcanic landscape.
Culinary Excellence
Gran Hotel Taoro repositions itself as a culinary destination with six restaurants, including Michelin-starred and high-profile chefs. Highlights include Restaurant OKA, merging Japanese haute cuisine with Mediterranean influences, and Amalur, which modernises traditional Spanish dishes. The dining options cater to both international guests and local gastronomes.
Wellness and Relaxation
The Sandára Wellness Centre, launching in March 2026 in partnership with French brand Anne Semonin, offers five treatment rooms, sauna, steam bath, and innovative showers, complemented by three heated swimming pools and expansive terraces. Guests can enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic and the iconic Teide volcano while indulging in premium wellness experiences.
With its combination of historic charm, modern luxury, gourmet dining, and wellness facilities, Gran Hotel Taoro revives Tenerife’s heritage of elite winter tourism, setting a new benchmark for high-end hospitality in Spain.
