American Airlines is once again thinking of serving Africa. Contrary to what had been announced before the pandemic (the opening of a Philadelphia Casablanca line), this time the company has listed destinations, whether business or tourist destinations.

"In an employee meeting last week, a recording of which was reviewed by View From The Wing, Znotins offered,

For Africa, as you know, big growing continent, a lot of different cultures and tourist type destinations, business destinations…We do have some African destinations that are in the list of things that we look at and we keep an eye on so I' m hopeful we get to the continent in the near future, but it always is shifting and changing. https://viewfromthewing.com/american-ai ... to-africa/

He is sure of one thing Oneworld must catch up in Africa compared to Star Alliance and SkyTeam.

The expansion of Qatar Airways in Africa, the arrival of Royal Air Maroc in Oneworld and the (big) partnership to come between Qatar Airways and RwandAir (pending the semi-privatization of RwandAir**) has enabled Oneworld "to return" to Africa after British Airways closed many routes (Entebbe, Dar Es Salaam, Monrovia, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Freetown,..) as well as Iberia (Lagos, Malabo, Johanensburg, Luanda).

** The release of Rwandan political prisoners last week from a request of the USA via Qatari mediation will probably move things

Potential destinations in Africa (in my opinion)

North Africa

Cairo: this is not a Oneworld hub, but in the past non-Star Alliance airlines have landed in Cairo. I remember Delta Airlines which I think had closed its line shortly after September 11, 2001. Before reopening it for a short time between 2009 and 2011 (closed due to the Arab Spring https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... cairo+2009). Egypt remains a very big market for the USA

Casablanca: the only Oneworld hub in Africa since the bankruptcy of Comair in South Africa. AA therefore had to open its PHL CMN line before the covid, but the pandemic canceled everything. Royal Air Maroc has a very good network in West and Central Africa. Some of the routes departing from CMN on Africa are already in code share with AA. RAM serves major American Airlines hubs in the western United States (Miami, Boston, JFK). There's Washington, but it's not an AA hub. The A321XLR counld fly on PHL CMN route

West Africa

Accra, Dakar and Lagos: a very good service from the United States with United Airlines and Delta Airlines (only DL for Dakar, but there is also Senegal Airlines on DKR JFK). American Airlines would also like to have its piece of the cake. But from Dallas? Miami? New York ? Philadelphia? The A321XLR will be too short for Lagos and Accra so probably the 787-8 and for Dakar why not the A321XLR.

I am thinking of Cape Verde. Very large Diaspora in Boston (finally in Massachusetts, 70,040 live there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Verdean_Americans). TACV served the USA from Sal and then Praia (when Praia airport was expanded to receive 757s). Delta Airlines had planned to serve Sal in 2009 in addition to Luanda (Angola) and Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), but reservations had been closed a few weeks before the first flight. https://www.travelagentcentral.com/tran ... -expansion

We can also think of Banjul (Gambia) served in the 2000s by North American Airlines in B767-300ER (https://mshale.com/2006/06/01/north-ame ... ly-to-west -africa/) or Monrovia also served in the past by North American Airlines and Delta. DL had left Liberia due to the Ebola outbreak (https://saharareporters.com/2014/07/10/ ... ia-flights) and Sierra Leone had tried to lure DL into 2013 (http://www.theafricanaviationtribune.co ... tches.html)

Southern Africa

Cape Town, Johannesburg: with the difficulties of South African Airways and the closure of long-haul routes to the United States. Delta Airlines and United Airlines took the opportunity to recover a significant share of point-to-point traffic between South Africa and the United States. Partnerships with local South African airlines allow US airlines to also offer connections to Southern and East Africa with Airlink

East Africa

Kigali (Rwanda): surprising because it is not the biggest US market compared to the destinations mentioned above. That said, the USA was the 1st market outside Africa for Rwanda in 2019 with 40,000 visitors per year. A share of tourists with high revenues and also business traffic for conferences (https://www.c9hotelworks.com/wp-content ... review.pdf ) (good for classes at the front of the plane). Rwanda being one of the countries in Africa that hosts the most conferences.

Point-to-point traffic will only fill a 787-8, however the RwandAir hub would allow American Airlines to connect via Kigali to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Cameroon and l South Africa or India (if the connecting times are good) to name the big markets. RwandAir being a close partner of Qatar Airways which is campaigning for a merger with Oneworld. RwandAir having code share on all Qatar Airways US routes (https://www.doha-airport.com/departures ... ndair?tp=0). Rwanda having also been certified FAA cat 1 this year and RwandAir no longer plans to go to the USA via Accra.

SkyTeam with Kenya Airways and Star Alliance with Ethiopian have non-stop flights between the USA and East Africa

AA visibly interline with RwandAir. On Facebook, people are posting flights from JFK Doha with American Airlines before going to Kigali with RwandAir. No worries public profile and he's a well-known person in the tourism world https://www.theexpeditionist.com/about

New site for Burundi Airlines with the addition of pages on social networks. For the moment the company is mainly used for handling at Bujumbura airport.

https://www.burundiairlines.bi/Pages/partners.php

On the company's Facebook page, we see Boeing officials who came to Burundi at the end of March 2023 to visit the MA 60. Aircraft received in 2012. I hope they were also able to visit the Caravelle and the 2 DC 3s of Air Burundi rather well preserved

“On this Friday 24/03/2023, the CEO of Burundi Airlines received in his office the wife of Boeing Anbessie Yitbarek and those who were traveling with them. After the interview he gave to the guests, the CEO of Burundi Airlines showed them some of the company's facilities at Melchior NDADAYE Airport." https://www.facebook.com/BdiAirlines/po ... mZRqZ7brZl

Ethpioian is currently operating a tag service Addis Ababa Ndjamena Garoua (Cameroon) ADD

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/230505-etmay23gou

Probably related to fuel shortage in Chad https://bnn.network/breaking-news/fuel- ... ck-market/

Ethiopian targets since few years secondaries cities in Africa. And why not Garoua could be a future destination for the airline. I know they want to serve Kumasi, the second biggest city in Ghana

Not also that some Ethiopian flights between Ethiopia South America are making fuel stop at Entebbe due to the closing of Sudanese airspace

While Ethiopian is looking to serve Lisbon (https://airspace-africa.com/2023/06/09/ ... rk-growth/), Hifly will operate some flights from Lisbon to Zanzibar, this summer from 30 July to 10 September. I wonder if it's the first ever commercial flight between East Africa and Portugal. I don't remmember that TAP served Nairobi

https://kiosquedaaviacao-pt.translate.g ... r_pto=wapp

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Air France launches direct flights to Dar es Salaam, its second destination in Tanzania https://www.aviation24.be/airlines/air- ... -tanzania/

28 years after the closure of the route. Too bad I was not at work that day didn't see how the flight was loaded. On Zanzibar, it won't be a problem. There are a lot of French people.

https://twitter.com/FranceTanzania/stat ... 5081840644

A few years ago XL Airways France made Paris Zanzibar with a fuel stop in Egypt. Unfortunately the route ended when XL closed its medium-haul sector and the competition from FlyDubai, Turkish Airlines and Oman Air which inevitably offered more competitive prices and better comfort. I had been able to speak with an XL executive while I was taking a picture of one of their A330s in Garuda livery for the Hajj at CDG.

In Dar Es Salaam, point-to-point traffic is lower on departure from Paris (11,500 https://simpleflying.com/air-france-add ... m-flights/). Behind Nairobi (56,282) and Kigali (14,243). Figures for 2019. On DAR it will mainly be connecting Europe and North America.

Anyway there is a gap to fill from Europe with the departures of British Airways and Swiss from Dar Es Salaam.

CDG is with Amsterdam, the airport in Europe (EU excluding Turkey) best connected to East Africa:

Amsterdam: Entebbe, Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam and Kigali
Paris: Nairobi, Zanzibar, Djibouti, Dar Es Salaam, Kigali (with RwandAir from June 27, 2023). A chance to see Bujumbura and Entebbe again from CDG, one day with Air France?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting development to come. All buissnes class airlines La Compagnie plans to open a Orly to Johannesburg route and also Beijing and Latin America. Probably A321 XLR (it will be limit limit with Johannesburg for the range).

Plan also to establish a company in the Maldives (https://flybeond.com/) and in Bermuda (https://flybermudair.com/)

Uganda Airlines started this week hajj lfights to Mecca. The airline plans to add Jeddah Entebbe route from September 2023, 3 times a week.

https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/bu ... ht-4275808

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Air Maroc s preparing to launch a tender for new long- and medium-haul aircraft as the airline wants to add new destinations in Americas, Europe and Africa. About America, i will see Philadephia that was supposed to be operated by American Airlines before covid and resume flights to Brazil

About Africa, in West Africa i don't see new routes, they serve all countries In Central Africa they serve all countries except Sao Tomé. So i will tend to think that the airline could resume flights to East Africa, since they ended flights to Nairobi. They resumed code share service with Kenya Airways few months ago. They had always the plan to serve Kigali since 2009. Entebbe could be also interesting.

EBB is the "gateway" for Morrocan working in United Nations peacekeeping missions in DR Congo. RAM operates charters flights from Agadir using B787-8.

Ethiopian Airlines should announce soon, the largest order for an African airline (if i m right)

130 planes from both Airbus and Boeing !! https://www.zawya.com/en/economy/africa ... n-cnfdm145

The company currently has 142 aircraft, including 127 for pax. Even if indeed, there are planes to replace. I am thinking about the B737-700s and probably the B777-200 LR / 300ER if the company orders more A350-1000s or or order its 1st B787-10s / B777-Xs. The fleet will soon exceed 200 aircraft. There are currently 42 aircraft on order (pax and cargo).

But with a fleet 3 times larger than Brussels Airlines, larger than Iberia or KLM, Ethiopian carries less pax

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethiopian_Airlines_fleet
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLM_fleet
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brussels_Airlines#Fleet
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberia_(airline)#Fleet

Meanwhile the airline earns more money. We will see if the departure of Girma Wake will change things We will see if the departure of Girma Wake will change things

China Southern reopens its Guangzhou Nairobi route. Exit the A330-200, switch to the A350-900  https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/221227-czjan23can

This route was inaugurated in 2015 then a few years CE adds a stop via Changsha. Covid has interrupted flights between China and Kenya. CSX resumed but not CAN.

Kenya Airways still operates the CAN-NBO route but via Bangkok.

We could think that there are dozens of lines operated by Chinese companies to Africa. It's not the cas. Nigeria was the first African country to see a Chinese airline land in Africa (China Southern Lagos Beijing in 2006 with the A330).

Air China to Ethiopia, China Southern to Mauritius, Hainan to Angola and Sudan, but most of these routes did not last long. Only South Africa, Egypt and Kenya are served by Chinese airlines. Air China in JNB, Sichuan Airlines in Cairo and China Southern in Nairobi.
Hi guys
It's great to see China Southern resuming its Guangzhou-Nairobi route after the COVID-related interruption. The switch to the A350-900 shows their commitment to enhancing passenger experience.free fire name

After being shown the door at Ouaga (see post on Brussels Airlines 2023), AF received an identical treatment from BKO.

IMG-20230811-WA0000.jpg

Summary :
I inform you that this breach (cancellation without prior notification) results in the cancellation of your authorization to operate flights for your "Summer 2023 season" program.
… and your slot could be granted to another company which would request it.

Sure that ET and TK will be quick on the ball but SN could offer a more direct solution for Pax coming from Western Europe....

About DR Congo the problem is bigger. The aviation is really in bad shape. People are frustrated

Few weeks ago several people broke windows glasses of the boarding hall at Lubumbashi airport because there were more passengers than the seats on a CAA Congo flight. https://twitter.com/lephoenix84/status/ ... 2318963721

If you make a research on google "bagarre annulation CAA Congo (brawl folowing cancelations) / Congo Airways or cris de colère des passagers Congo Airways" (agnry passengers Congo Airways) you will see several articles published in 2021, 2022 and 2023

As i said earlier in this week, people who wants to move from Kinshasa to Eastern Congo or vis versa have to via Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Or either take the boat to Brazzaville then fly to Kigali and take the bus to Gisenyi (Goma) or the plane to Kamembe (Bukavu). It's safer, but longer and more expansive.

Thanks to the night flight btw ADD and FIH you doesn't need to spend a night at ADD if you fly between Goma and Kinhsasa or Lubumbashi and Kinshasa. However via Nairobi and Kigali you need to spend a night at Kigali or Nairobi. KQ deleted its night flight to Kinshasa before covid and RwandAir has suspended flights to FIH.

It's like if in Europe a guy who wants to fly from Paris to Marseille has to fly via London or Amsterdam.

Akasa Air (India) plans to add flights to East Africa. Without no suprise, i guess that Nairob (BOM NBO O&D 96 823 pax in 2019) i is on the top of the list. However probably there is a strong marked from Entebbe and Dar Es Salaam.

I don't think that Kigali could be on the list. Market is probably not big. I don't know if for 2022, we are at same level or over or below.

The two biggest O&D 2019

BOM KGL : 10 924
DEL KGL : 3 074

Addis Ababa, there is a strong competition with Ethiopian which provides several daily flights to India. Enough for point to point trafic.

2019 ADD BOM O&D : 31 390 while, BOM JNB via ADD : 80 898 pax

Khartoum seems to have a huge demand. Only via ADD for KRT BOM : 67 066 pax (2019). But there is a war in Sudan.

Forgot Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea and South Sudan.

Currently, Uganda Airlines, Indigo, Air India, Air Tanzania, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and RwandAir provide flights between East Africa and India

Malawi Airlines has taken delivery of a B737-700 ex Asky. Which marks the return of the 737-700 to the fleet. The company still has Nampula, Kigali in its sights. It has just announced flights to Entebbe (Uganda). In my opinion there is a strong chance that it will be a double touch with Kigali. With if this is the case a possibility of having traffic rights (a hypothesis on my part). The O&D between Kigali and Entebbe was 49,185 pax in 2019. Rwanda is a big market for Uganda and vise versa if we compare with RwandAir and its 3 daily flights.

In an article from Jeune Afrique about the Royal Air Maroc vs Air Algérie match, RAM plans to add new destinations in Africa:

Tripoli, N’Djamena, Abuja, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Sal (Cape Verde), Oran, Khartoum, Kigali, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa. Abuja, Johannesburg and Nairobi (the code share with Kenya Airways has been relaunched in 2023) have in the past been served by RAM. About Kigali it's in project since....2009 https://www-yabiladi-com.translate.goog ... r_pto=wapp (my brother and his wife will be able to fly Montpellier (France)-Casablanca-Kigali with Royal Air Maroc)

About Kigali it will be interesting if there will also be a partnership with RwandAir (an access to the RAM network for RwandAir). RAM and RwandAir 2 companies in the Qatar Airways galaxy
This is how Royal Air Maroc assures that it wants to open, initially, Tripoli, N’Djamena, Abuja, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Sal (Cape Verde); then, in a second phase, Oran, Khartoum, Kigali Dar es-Salam and Addis Ababa, before arriving, at the end of its plan, to serve “all African capitals”

We can think that JNB will be served by B787 and the 737Max will be used for East Africa (NG for West and North Africa)

All East African destinations seen above are already in Royal Air Maroc booking engine, but it's via Doha, with Qatar Airways or its partners.
