With their flights BRU-AMS, KLM isn't looking for passengers that are familiar with railway transport. KLM knows those passengers will use the scheduled IC train from Brussels/Antwerp to Schiphol.

KLM aims the international travellers, not familiar with our railway system, and for whom "Brussels Airport" is a familiar place to go to. For overseas travellers, BRU is an easy reference to drop a rental car, there is no risk to get lost, there is no risk that no one will be able to help them in English, there is no risk that they will be robbed on the street just before departure. And once they are at the KLM check-in desk at BRU, they relax.

That makes sense, thanks. Yet it seems to me that there are less and less potential passengers so poorly informed, given the www and its thousand search engines. So that I can well imagine these AMS-BRU flights to be further reduced, like as not even to zero. As you stated before: the slots can be put to better use for long-distance flights. And as you also stated: sure enough they will "market" this as a climate/environment improvement.
