Boeing 797 or NMA news

Post by sn26567 »

We have reported earlier about Boeing's intention to develop a new middle-of-the-market plane to take the succession of the 757:

Boeing is talking with airlines about a potential Boeing 797
https://www.aviation24.be/manufacturers/ ... potential/

Boeing seems keen to go ahead with a new jet: a Boeing 797
https://www.aviation24.be/manufacturers/ ... a-new-jet/

In this thread, we shall discuss the news about this new project, with a first information hereunder:

Boeing returned to considering a metal fuselage for the Boeing 797 as an alternative to the ovoid-based composite design, due essentially to costs concerns.

Airbus is not planning to respond with a new aircraft should Boeing go ahead with a proposed middle of the market jet. Airbus may decide to further improve its A321neo instead.

Boeing is expected to launch the new B797 at the Paris Airshow in July 2019, with forecasts for sales ranging from 2000 to 6000, and a list price of around US$150 million. Entry into service to be around 2025.

I am actually not thrilled by the b797,( assuming it will be a single aisled plane ) nor by the a321LR (or XLR )

I get that the 'MMA' has to be filled, however, I do not look forward to sit in a single aisle plane to cross the Atlantic. Did it 1 time with a b757-200, the experience was dreadful... 7-8 hours on these planes is just too much. The idea that a b737-9 Max can cover the distance as well ( which primavera wanted to do out of BRU ) makes me shiver as well. 7-8 hours on a b737? No thank you, I'll happily avoid any of that.

Am I the only one with this sentiment?

The 797 as it stands now is nothing more than a competitor for the Airbus A321neoLR. Airbus doesn't need to go back to the drawing board.

Well, I know for a fact that they are exploring the A321XLR (not launched yet), it would be a A321neoLR but with even bigger fuel tanks to extend the range to 4700nm, compared to the A321LR, which has a range of about 4000 nm

If they do it the same way like they did with the Tu-204, Western aircraft manufacturers will nothing to fear about. The Tu-204 is a formidable aircraft - it came just decades too late. Further honorable mentions:
The An-148 is not selling at all.
The SSJ-100 could be sold to a limited number of Western customers, which are very annoyed by the lack of spare parts availabillity and customer care. SN is already getting rid of them, Cityjet is still thinking, Interjet of Mexiko is less than pleased as well.
Any other types, apart from cargo airplanes of old design that still fly (An-12, An-24, An-124, An-225, Il-76)? Nope.

Let's see how well the Comac C919 and the Irkut MC-21 will sell. At the moment, they mainly will sell on their respective domestic markets, with very limited international interest in their products. And mind that they are single-aisle short-to-middle-haul, no longhaul or twin aisle types are in sight.

In 2030? Well, anything can happen. I still believe that Russian and Chinese manufacturers will only have a limited impact on the global aircraft market.
Best regards,
Viktor

Boeing said it would make a final launch decision in 2020 on its proposed new mid-sized jetliner (Boeing 797), depending on the results of a round of commercial pre-marketing which it may begin in 2019.

The Boeing 797 could come with a cockpit built for just one pilot, say analysts, with the new aircraft announcement unlikely to be made at the Paris Air Show due to the B737 MAX grounding.

Qatar Airways hopes to be a launch customer for the Boeing’s proposed NMA plane if the manufacturer decides to move forward with the programme.

Delta Air Lines is still holding out hope that Boeing will move ahead with the B797 once it resolves the B737 MAX crisis. Delta plans to use the aircraft to replace its mid-range planes.

Boeing is mulling a re-engined derivative of the B767, dubbed 767-XF, which will be used mainly for cargo from the mid-2020s, but could be used as the basis for NMA.

Boeing is said to be quietly pitching the idea for a "Future Small Airplane", a 180 to 210-seat aircraft that will be the successor to B737 MAX and B757s, as customers are not too interested in the NMA aka B797.

Delta Air Lines wants Boeing to build the so-called B797, as the A321XLR is the right plane for its transatlantic network.

Err..., if the A321XLR is the right plane for them, why would they want another one?

Boeing says the potential NMA or B797 is on a slower track now while the company re-evaluates airline needs. The company’s plan to rethink the NMA’s feasibility is “not intended to delay but refresh.”

Boeing appears to be redirecting its next new airliner project to compete more directly with the long-range Airbus A321XLR rather than take on the broader 757-767 replacement market previously studied under the shelved "New Midmarket Airplane" (NMA) project.
