Air Lease expects it will take at least 24 months before all B737 MAX aircraft — manufactured since the March 2019 grounding — are reabsorbed into the global fleet, once the aircraft returns to the air.

Southwest Airlines pilot union head sharply criticized Boeing and questioned whether the manufacturer was trying to speed up the timeline for the B737 MAX’s return to service. The pilots union backed the company’s recent comments that it will evaluate whether to diversify its fleet beyond B737s. A unique opportunity for Airbus!

Indonesia will not approve the return of the B737 MAX to its skies until after aviation regulators in the US, EU, Brazil, Canada, and China do so first.

FAA expands pickle fork airworthiness directive
The FAA has expanded its airworthiness directive regarding cracks in 737NG pickle forks, now requiring inspections of 8 fasteners instead of 2, after recent inspections discovered cracks outside the scope of the FAA’s previous mandate. Aircraft already inspected will need to be inspected again.

United postpones until March 2020 the restart of MAX flights.

First order for the 737 MAX since the grounding 8 months ago: SunExpress converts an option for 10 737 MAX 8 into a firm order.

Ethiopian Airlines has not decided yet whether to take more deliveries of the B737 MAX, says CEO Tewolde Gebremariam, as Boeing completes revisions to the aircraft’s design.

FAA and other US air-safety regulators are considering ways to alter fundamentally how they certify aircraft in the wake of the B737 MAX crisis.

FAA head Steve Dickson is pushing back on any “pressure” to return the B737 MAX to service.

SpiceJet (India) is in talks with Boeing to buy more B737 MAX aircraft to feed its expansion plans. The carrier is looking to set up a new hub in the Middle East and expand to eastern Europe. Discussions are taking place and the size of the order hasn’t been determined.

Boeing should be required to redesign the engine casing on its B737 NGs, says NTSB, and airlines should retrofit more than 6,800 planes currently in service worldwide following the April 2018 engine blowout that killed a Southwest Airlines passenger.

Boeing has obtained a “firm” order with an unnamed airline for 20 B737 MAX planes valued at US$2.3 billion.

Transport Canada is still in talks with its counterparts in the US, Europe and Brazil to potentially request the entire removal of the MCAS system from the B737 MAX before signing off on the redesign.

Makers of aircraft parts are making contingency plans for a prolonged grounding of B737 MAX, with several expecting the jet’s return to service to take longer than Boeing hopes.

Indonesia’s national airline Garuda has cancelled a huge $6 billion order for 49 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets because it believes customers have lost confidence in the aircraft.

Fiji Airways ferried its two B737 MAX jets to Alice Springs (Australia) as the wet season approaches.

Boeing won’t likely get the nod from the FAA to return the B737 MAX to service until January 2020 at the earliest, however, a slight chance of being cleared in December 2019 remains.

Furthermore, FAA (has notified Boeing that the agency will be the only issuer of airworthiness certificates for all new B737 MAX planes, a role that it had shared with the aircraft maker in the past.

LOT Polish Airlines blames the B737 MAX grounding for hindering its growth plans. The carrier transported 8.9 million passengers in 2018 and expects more than 10 million in 2019. Leases on current B737 Classics will not be extended despite the grounding.

Ryanair plans to close at least one or two more bases, after the new design flaw in the B737 MAX was detected, thus further delaying delivery.
