Southwest Airlines pilot union head sharply criticized Boeing and questioned whether the manufacturer was trying to speed up the timeline for the B737 MAX’s return to service. The pilots union backed the company’s recent comments that it will evaluate whether to diversify its fleet beyond B737s. A unique opportunity for Airbus!

Indonesia will not approve the return of the B737 MAX to its skies until after aviation regulators in the US, EU, Brazil, Canada, and China do so first.

FAA expands pickle fork airworthiness directive
The FAA has expanded its airworthiness directive regarding cracks in 737NG pickle forks, now requiring inspections of 8 fasteners instead of 2, after recent inspections discovered cracks outside the scope of the FAA’s previous mandate. Aircraft already inspected will need to be inspected again.

Ethiopian Airlines has not decided yet whether to take more deliveries of the B737 MAX, says CEO Tewolde Gebremariam, as Boeing completes revisions to the aircraft’s design.

FAA and other US air-safety regulators are considering ways to alter fundamentally how they certify aircraft in the wake of the B737 MAX crisis.

FAA head Steve Dickson is pushing back on any “pressure” to return the B737 MAX to service.

SpiceJet (India) is in talks with Boeing to buy more B737 MAX aircraft to feed its expansion plans. The carrier is looking to set up a new hub in the Middle East and expand to eastern Europe. Discussions are taking place and the size of the order hasn’t been determined.

Boeing should be required to redesign the engine casing on its B737 NGs, says NTSB, and airlines should retrofit more than 6,800 planes currently in service worldwide following the April 2018 engine blowout that killed a Southwest Airlines passenger.

Transport Canada is still in talks with its counterparts in the US, Europe and Brazil to potentially request the entire removal of the MCAS system from the B737 MAX before signing off on the redesign.

Makers of aircraft parts are making contingency plans for a prolonged grounding of B737 MAX, with several expecting the jet’s return to service to take longer than Boeing hopes.

Indonesia’s national airline Garuda has cancelled a huge $6 billion order for 49 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets because it believes customers have lost confidence in the aircraft.

Fiji Airways ferried its two B737 MAX jets to Alice Springs (Australia) as the wet season approaches.

Boeing 737 Max re-certification likely to slide into 2020, the specialised Ryanair model (737 MAX 8-200) faces new 'design issue’, which compels Ryanair to cut its delivery expectation in half for 2020.

Boeing won’t likely get the nod from the FAA to return the B737 MAX to service until January 2020 at the earliest, however, a slight chance of being cleared in December 2019 remains.

Furthermore, FAA (has notified Boeing that the agency will be the only issuer of airworthiness certificates for all new B737 MAX planes, a role that it had shared with the aircraft maker in the past.

LOT Polish Airlines blames the B737 MAX grounding for hindering its growth plans. The carrier transported 8.9 million passengers in 2018 and expects more than 10 million in 2019. Leases on current B737 Classics will not be extended despite the grounding.

The FAA has proposed a fine of $3.9 million on Boeing for a manufacturing defect. The faulty parts - slat tracks on the leading edge of the wing - were found to be installed on about 133 Boeing 737s, both MAXs and NGs.

Boeing says significant additional regulatory requirements or delays in returning B737 MAX to commercial service could cause it to cut or temporarily halt production of the aircraft.

Boeing said it does not expect B737 MAX order cancellations due to the grounding. Do they forget there were already cancellations?

Boeing is not recommending new or additional simulator training for pilots before the grounded B737 MAX flies again. Boeing is seeking “mandatory computer-based training modules” and other training materials.

FAA is planning a new division that aims to improve aircraft certification, a development that comes as the agency is under increasing scrutiny for approving the B737 MAX.

FAA won’t likely clear the B737 MAX aeroplanes for flight until 2020, says chief Steve Dickson.

Southwest Airways says it will share some of the B737 MAX compensation money with its employees. The carrier will add US$125 million to the profit-sharing pool.

Nice gesture!

China has raised “important concerns” with Boeing regarding design changes proposed to end the grounding of the B737 MAX, Beijing’s aviation regulator said, declining to say when it might fly in China again.

The airworthiness of the 737 MAX as a mean of pressure against Trump in trade deals?

Michael O'Leary tells Ryanair passengers will not know if a Boeing 737 Max is due to operate a flight when they make a booking. But he says this is not a problem because "consumer confidence in the type will return quickly". Really? What if people refuse to fly Ryanair because they don't know whether they'll fly on a MAX?

FAA doesn't expect MAX back to service before end March 2020, postponed due to a "confusing" procedure for cockpit crew.

American Airlines now anticipates that the resumption of scheduled commercial service on its fleet of B737 MAX aircraft will occur 07 April 2020.

Russian lessor Avia Capital Services withdrew the case against Boeing regarding the grounded B737 MAX. ACS sought US$115 million in damages over its 2013 order for 35 MAX jets, including a refund of $35 million in deposits. Deliveries planned between 2022 and 2024.

Boeing has delayed plans to reach a record production rate of 57 B737 (MAX) jets per month in 2020. Room to store them might indeed become difficult to find ;)

FAA (US) chief Steve Dickson is meeting with Boeing chief executive Dennis Muilenburg on the fate of the grounded B737 MAX, as he is “concerned that Boeing continues to pursue a return to service schedule that is not realistic due to delays that accumulated for a variety of reasons".

FAA (US) is not expected to allow the return B737 MAX to service until at least mid-February 2020.
