Daily review (methinks this will continue for a while...):

Air Do of Japan to suspend additional 140 flights on six routes including the Haneda – Sapporo route within January 2021 due to decreased demand.

Air France-KLM is expected to suffer further significant losses in 2021, to the order of €2 billion, which will be less than 2020. A further capital injection of €4.5 to 5 billion is likely to follow.

Thai Airways International is operating a reduced flight schedule from now until 27 March 2021, during the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic and future demand.

Yemenia calls for assistance from the new government, but says the company’s future is secure despite the downturn caused by the impact of the pandemic.

Oman and India to extend their Air Bubble Agreement by one month until 31 January 2021.

Daily review:

EgyptAir Holding was granted a state loan of US$130 million to help the carrier ride the downturn. The government will bear the financing of the loan until the airline can return to 80% of its previous capacity.

Ryanair now expects the newly announced lockdowns will materially reduce its flight schedules and traffic forecast through 1Q 2021. Ryanair now expects that its January traffic to fall to under 1.25 million passengers, and that new restrictions could also reduce February and March traffic to as little as 500,000 passengers each month.

Daily review:

Bangkok Airways announces more temporary domestic route suspensions, as well as the temporary closure of its ticketing office due to the pandemic.

Grupo Aeromexico and its pilots did not reach a satisfactory agreement regarding salary modifications, thus putting the carrier in a complicated situation the remaining disbursement of DIP Financing.

Ryanair is threatening Belgium, as well as other countries, with additional job cuts by the end of January 2021, as it looks to reach new labour agreements.

Wizz Air will cut its flying plans for January 2021 because of new lockdowns in Britain, but the carrier still expects travel demand to return by summer.

Portugal is confident the EC will approve its plan to rescue TAP, Finance Minister Joao Leao said in an interview, adding that he expected that green light by the end of March 2021.

Daily review:

British Airways and easyJet said they were reviewing their plans in response to new national lockdowns, with reductions to already low levels of flying almost certain.

Virgin Atlantic will this week secure a cash injection of US$230 million, enabling it to repay a costly loan and underpin its finances. The funds will be raised through the sale/leaseback of two B787s.

WestJet to reduce capacity, impacting the jobs of about 1,000 employees, as the carrier faces volatile demand due to mounting government restrictions.

CAA of China said that flights to and from the UK will remain suspended from 11 January 2021 in order to further properly respond to the possible impact of the mutant novel coronavirus.

Aeromexico requested to the Mexican labour authorities the termination “due to force majeure” of the collective contracts of pilots and flight attendants, as an agreement could not be reached.

Air Arabia Maroc will proceed with the elimination of several jobs as part of a new social plan.

Daily review:

JetBlue and American Airlines Group announced their strategic alliance is moving ahead following review by the US DOT. The carriers expect this alliance will accelerate each airline’s recovery from the pandemic.

LAM of Mozambique announced the end of the operation on the Maputo – Lisbon route due to the pandemic, effectively ending the six-month A330-300 wet-lease with HiFly.

Qatar Airways plans to operate half of its fleet of ten A380s once they return to service.

Daily review:

Air Canada is adjusting its network by further reducing 1Q 2021 system capacity by an additional 25%. As a result, there will be a workforce reduction of approximately 1700 employees.

Alaska Air Group reports cash burn in 4Q 2020 was approximately US$350 million. Alaska expects January 2021 cash burn will be approximately $125-$150 million, which assumes the demand environment remains soft in the month.

Azul plans to keep its future A330-900, MSN 1952, in storage until 2022.

Eastar Jet of South Korea plans to file for court receivership in January 2021 to find a new investor amid the pandemic.

Emirates expects its full fleet of A380s and B777s to be in use by the end of 2021 as confidence in travel is renewed.

Qantas expects to run at 60% of pre-pandemic domestic capacity in 1Q 2020 due to state border closings.

Aeromexico to layoff 374 flight attendants as part of its restructuring. This is in addition to the 616 with whom the carrier has already ended employment.

Kenya Airways plans further pay cuts for employees of as much as 30% after the airline due to the slump in air travel.

Daily review:

Delta Air Lines entered into a Payroll Support Programme Extension Agreement with the US Treasury. Delta expects to receive US$2.9 billion in payroll support payments, which must be used exclusively for the continuation of payment of employee wages, salaries and benefits. Similarly, SkyWest has entered into a Payroll Support Program Extension Agreement with the US Treasury Department to receive a total of approximately $233 million under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. And Southwest Airlines entered into definitive documentation with the US Treasury with respect to funding support under the PSP Extension Law. The Company’s expected aggregate receipts under the program total US$1.7 billion.

IATA says the world’s airlines need another US$70-$80 billion of government support to get through the crisis caused by the pandemic.

Appraisers plan to reset the vintage of undelivered jets stranded for more than a year by the pandemic. Their vintage will be based on when the planes are delivered, even if that doesn’t happen for another year or two.

Daily review:

Air Canada flight attendants’ union accuses the airline of pocketing federal wage supports to pad their bottom line and leaving thousands of its employees behind.

Air France-KLM bailout talks between Dutch and French governments are going extremely slow, largely due to the Dutch government’s insistence that it will only invest further in KLM.

Thai AirAsia sees a drop in air travel and decides to ask 75% of the workforce to leave without pay for four months starting in February 2021. The carrier flies only 10 planes now due to the sluggish demand. Thai AirAsia is trying to secure loans from banks by itself, instead of waiting for state approval, as there is little hope for financial support from the government.

UK government said it will move to help support airports amid new curbs to travel regulations in the UK. The move following warnings from groups in the aviation sector that businesses risk collapse under another long travel curb.

Allegiant Air entered into a Payroll Support Program Extension Agreement with the US Treasury for the first instalment of an award, which is approximately US$91.8 million. If additional funds are allocated and exceed $100 million, the carrier will issue a note for 30% of the funds received under the PSP2 in excess of $100.0 million and the company will issue to Treasury warrants to purchase a number of shares of common stock.

American Airlines and subsidiaries entered into a Payroll Support Program Extension Agreement with the US Treasury, which is expected to total in the aggregate at least US$3.0 billion.

Almasria Universal Airlines of Egypt aims to restart its flights, flying domestically as well as to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Djibouti, and 10 destinations within Europe.

Etihad warns employees that more job losses will be announced imminently, as demand remains depressed.

Iran Air announces the reduction of 2000 employees by the end of 2021, as sanctions and the pandemic takes its toll.

TAP Air Portugal presented a counter-proposal to the pilots’ union that includes the dismissal of 458 pilots, reduction of remunerations and suppression of clauses of the company agreement.

Venezuela’s CAA said it is reopening flights to Panama and the Dominican Republic that it shut last month due to pandemic.

Air Canada flights to Bermuda will be grounded until at least 12 April 2021 due to increased travel restrictions.

Air France will not obtain any additional financial support from the State, says Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire.

Enter Air to obtain a liquidity loan from the Polish Development Fund in the amount of US$76.7 million. The funds will be released in February 2021.

Hawaiian Airlines entered into a Payroll Support Program Extension Agreement with the US Treasury to obtain US$167.5 million.

Indigo Partners has expressed his optimism of recovery of leisure and VFR traffic will begin in 2H 2021. Long-haul international and business travel recovery will take more time.

IndiGo has emerged as one of the world’s biggest airlines by capacity, aided by a swift recovery in the domestic aviation market to nearly 80% of pre-pandemic levels and the financial strength to boost market share as rivals struggle.

KLM will halt 270 weekly long-haul flights and an undetermined number of European flights to the Netherlands from 22 January 2021, as a result of lockdowns.

Air Belgium advises its customers with a flight scheduled to Martinique or Guadeloupe to postpone it, as flights to the islands could be suspended from 23 January 2021 due to travel restrictions.

Emirates to resume passenger flights from Dubai to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane a week after announcing it was suspending the routes.

JetBlue entered into a Payroll Support Program Extension Agreement with the US Treasury, who provided to the carrier a payment of approximately US$252 million.

With the suspension of KLM long haul flights, it means that probably there won't be flights between Amsterdam and Nairobi, during Februrary month. I think that Air France still keeping its weekly service from Paris.

The airline expects to resume regular services to France on 3 March 2021 and to the Netherlands on 7 March 2021, and will keep customers updated in case of any changes to these resumption plans.

KLM has not yet confirmed the suspension on its social channels. And today a number of long-haul flights were operated outbound. But maybe they will have to come back almost empty?

Air Antilles of Guadeloupe has announced the temporary suspension of all air services until further notice, as a result of even more restrictive measures between Paris (and Charleroi?) and its home base.

Air Belgium to temporarily suspend flights to and from the French West Indies from 30 January until 01 March 2021, as a result of travel restrictions.

Air Seychelles cannot be sustained due to US$37 million in debt, says the government, who may trim the carrier’s operations down to just domestic and ground handling services.

Cathay Pacific says the new Hong Kong travel restrictions measure will have a significant impact on its ability to service passenger and cargo markets, which may result in a reduction of the current passenger capacity of around 60%, a reduction of the current cargo capacity of around 25% and a further increase in cash burn of approximately US$38-$51 million per month.

Edelweiss pilots’ union has agreed with the airline on cost-cutting measures in the wake of the pandemic. The temporary measures include short-time work and part-time work with lower wages.

Finnair will re-start passenger flights from the UK and Ireland to Finland as of 25 January 2021 (today), following the decision by the Finnish traffic authority to allow passenger flights from these countries.

KLM will keep operating long haul flights after agreeing with the government on softer demands for returning air crews to carry out rapid COVID-19 tests.

Lufthansa Group, which is losing €1 million every two hours, says conditions are improving and the reduced losses reflect its cost-cutting initiative. the carrier does not expect to need the entire €9 billion in government loans, having only used €3 billion thus far. As part of the initiatives, the A340-600 fleet will not be coming back.

People’s from Austria is postponing the resumption of the connection from Altenrhein to Vienna until the end of March 2021 due to low demand.

France is looking at extending state support for *Airbus and other aerospace firms through 2024 after the planemaker reined in production plans amid travel recovery concerns.

Israel decided to ban incoming and outgoing passenger flights from 25 January 2021 until the end of the month in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
