RwandAir in 2020

Post by sn26567 »

Since we have a specialist of Rwanda and RwandAir in our readership, I thought it would be nice to start a topic on this airline.

A first item to report today: Rwandair is “looking at acquiring a freighter in the near future", according to chief executive Yvonne Makolo. Freight is indeed booming these days!

Cote d’Ivoire and Rwanda are set to ratify their Air Transport Agreement, with the aim of liberalising the traffic rights.

RwandAir now operates 70% of its pre covid19 routes. https://www.newtimes.co.rw/news/rwandai ... vid-routes

The airline now serves:

Nairobi and Mombasa (Kenya), Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa), London Heathrow, Brussels, Bujumbura (Burundi), Kamembe (Rwanda), Dar Es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Libreville, Cotonou, Douala, Harare (Zimbabwe), Lusaka (Zambia), Abuja and Lagos (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana), Dubai and Mumbai via the Rwanda India Bubble (https://www.news18.com/news/auto/india- ... 38180.html)

Abidjan, Tel Aviv, Juba and Dakar are suspended. I have some doubts about Dakar and Abidjan. Flights were operated from the RwandAir Cotonou base (2 RwandAir B737s were based). I don't know if the airline will reusme flights to DKR and ABJ (ABJ is served since 2011, but since 2017 only from Cotonou). Tel Aviv was the latest RwandAir route. Currently Israir operates a seasonal service.

I think flights to China are still suspended. Few month ago Flights to China were suspended (at least for 1 week) due the high numbers of covid19 cases, from pax flying with RwandAir https://twitter.com/globaltimesnews/sta ... 7095729153

The Singpour Airlines Vice-President in charge of partnership of visited the Rwanda Embassy in Singapour, on 2Dec2020, for future partnership with Rwanda. Maybe RwandAir will be included.

It won't be the first time that Singapour provides help to Rwanda. Changi Airports International has played a big role in the upgrade of the Kigali Airport, since early 2010s. https://www.cai.sg/

Monday is with Friday the busiest days at Kigali. Ethiopian Airlines operates 1 flights a day instead of 2. Kenya Airways Group (KQ + Jambojet) operates 1 flight a day, instead of 3. And Turkish Airlines currently serves Kigali on weekly service instead of daily service. Jambojet is the only airline which didn't resume flights to Rwanda. Like SN, Qatar Airways makes a day stop at Kigali
