It was even not 8 year but even 10 years in a row that they made profit. The management was also very solid with a Belgian CEO
The Belgian CEO which you remember is Johan Vanneste, currently CEO of Köln-Bonn Airport. Daily management was done by a mostly Belgian team. However during this whole time VLM had actually been completely in the hands of the Dutch entrepreneur Jaap Rosen Jacobsen, since he bought the airline with 1 aircraft in 1995 until he sold it with 18 aircraft in 2007 to AF-KLM. During this time Jacobsen was not involved with petty daily management, but he was very involved with all the strategic decisions. He cashed 178 mio EUR by selling VLM!

Before the take over by City/AF, VLM was under the management of Johan Vanneste and made benefits for 10 years in a row.
The French take over (CityJet was already taken over by AF), quickly become a disaster and killed a chicken-with-the-golden-eggs. A French Madame was responsible for the destruction of both CityJet and VLM.
Later she got promoted in AF. Vive l'incompétence.

Then came a clownesque management with Englishers, who started and stopped quickly destiantion like Rostock, Waterford,....Maribor ..

It shows two things:
* a successful business airline from ANR is possible
* the airline business is full of incompetent clowns.

Air Antwerp told me once they have a solution, but they wouldn't disclose what. I guess it is another F-50 from Amapola.

The success of VLM was only possible because of a temporary window of opportunity, lack of competition and their precious slot portfolio at LCY. VLM made some crumbs on ANR-LCY, but the butter came from elsewhere (AMS-LCY, RTM-LCY, MAN-LCY). The financial success however was way too little to remain sustainable as a small, independent carrier. AFAIK, there was never confidence within VLM to be able to ever replace the aging F50 fleet. The only hope for a long term future was by being absorbed by a larger airline group who could make the necessary long term investments.

Yeh, but that was the pre-corona plan, where OO-VLS was busy all day almost every day.

As long as LCY remains closed and doesn't announce a reopening (https://www.londoncityairport.com/coronavirus), there's no use in restarting the flights out of ANR.
