Qatar Airways launched new service to Brisbane on 30 March to tap into a market it want to do for long time. This very interesting because also the airline struggling so it is surprising they launch a new route. Qatar taking a different approach to the coronavirus crisis, very interesting.

Serious doubts at Air France about the Airbus A380, not yet sure if it is going to fly again after the crisis.

Air Transat to retire its Airbus A310 by 1 April.

By 1 April!? That’s so soon! Such a shame, I mean the A310 has been in service for ages, it just shows how good of a plane it was really.

Daily review:

Air Mauritius has suspended all flights until 30 April 2020 due to restrictions related to the outbreak of coronavirus.

Air New Zealand to emerge from the pandemic as a much smaller airline and could take years to get back to its former size, says CEO Greg Foran. It is planning to be a domestic airline with limited international services for the foreseeable future. The workforce will reduce by up to 3500 roles in the coming months.

Air Nostrum to temporarily stop flying until further notice due to restrictions on domestic and international mobility and the closure of borders caused by the coronavirus.

AirAsia Indonesia
to suspend all its QZ flight code services starting 01 April 2020 due to the pandemic. The carrier’s domestic and international routes will be temporarily suspended until 21 April and 17 May, respectively.

Alitalia to layoff over 6800 employees, more than half the total workforce due to the current market conditions.

Avianca Holdings has put in place and offered to all of its employees a voluntary unpaid leave program, cut all non-essential CapEx, and has temporarily deferred payments on its long-term leases and on payment of principal on certain loan obligations. Avianca is actively seeking mutually satisfactory agreements with its key suppliers, strategic lenders and other creditors to address the current scenario.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport to obtain a €300 million loan from the federal government to help to ensure that airports do not go broke. Tegel Airport to remain open for now.

Camair-co (is weighing a temporary suspension of operations and layoffs due to the coronavirus.

Condor has applied for an additional €200 million in state aid from KfW IPEX-Bank (Germany) in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Reports suggest the deal with Polish Aviation Group may not materialize.

Cubana de Aviacion has cancelled all its operations until 24 April 2020 due to the global pandemic.

EasyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou is threatening to seek the removal of most of its board members unless it cancels a €5 billion aircraft order that he warned could threaten its future amid the coronavirus pandemic.

El Al, as well as smaller local airlines Arkia and Israir, support an immediate merger in order to survive. At minimum Arkia and Israir must merge, they say.

Finnair has already taken a €600 million funding guarantee from the government of Finland to help its business outlook as the coronavirus crisis takes it toll. Temporary lay-offs for thousands of staff to come.

IATA says Indian airlines are currently in “grave and immediate danger” of insolvency as a result of the disruption in air travel due to the coronavirus pandemic. IATA sees that a “turning point” could be in sight for airlines in China, as domestic passengers are starting to once again take to the skies.

LATAM Airlines Group will temporarily suspend additional international services until 30 April 2020, due to travel restrictions put in place by national authorities and lower demand resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Loganair plans to ask for government help to get through the coronavirus pandemic as the airline may not survive without government help.

Overland Airways of Nigeria to temporarily shelve its flight operations from 28 March to 05 April 2020 as part of efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

PassionAir of Ghana suspends operations from 30 March to 12 April 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Porter Airlines will obtain US$96.4 million in commercial financing from the government during the coronavirus pandemic. The financing from Export Development Canada is secured by a portion of its fleet of 29 aircraft.

Thai Airways International to come up with two plans by April 2020, the first to get the carrier through the coronavirus outbreak and another for business rehabilitation. Thai may permanently reduce the number of aircraft types it deploys once the coronavirus outbreak ends. The carrier is grounding 69 of its 82 jets following a drop in passenger volume and route cancellations.

Greece approached by six of its airlines — Air Mediterranee, Blue Bird, Ellinair, GainJet, Lumiwings, and Orange2Fly — who are requesting emergency state aid to whether the pandemic.

Russia’s government is considering imposing a complete ban on domestic travel, both by air and rail in the face of the coronavirus threat.

I looks for aviation24 article but not found, maybe important idea to reporting on it; Air New Zealand wants retrofit 777-200 to have combi -> freighter & passenger plane. This I think we see lot more in coming weeks...

I would be interested to see what kind of conversion they will use.

Just some personal thoughts, take them for they are worth:

If the conversion weighs 5 tons, that is 50 imaginary passengers you transport every single flight (even on an empty ferryflight).

If you look a the B777 freighter, it is a -200 fuselage with -300 wings and the powerfull GE90-110 engines. Far from a -200. Here you have a -200 with -200 wings and -200 engines. Add the conversion weight with lower powered engines, add loading restrictions and other specific loading problems (DG, CAO, etc)...

Back in the TNT had some of these quick-change. Cargo door only weighed 2 tons I believe, not to forget the weights of all the pallets that carried the seats. Also believe they had higher rated engines to counter, but that didn't help a lot, not for freight flights (limited volume), not for passenger flights (limited range).

BRU closed the entire A-pier. All remaining flights are now handled from the B-pier...

Kenya Airways also impact by the coronavirus. They goed to the government for cash, they struggling for a long time. Hopefully they staying in service because they important for the African aviation industry.

Daily review:

Air Canada will reduce its capacity for the 2Q 2020 by 85%-90% YoY and will temporarily place 15,200 members of its unionized workforce on Off Duty Status and furlough about 1,300 managers.

Easyjet Switzerland request state aid due to fallout from the drop in demand as a result of the coronavirus.

Emirates to receive state aid, says the government, who is committed to the airline.

Eurowings says the flight programme on offer has been temporarily reduced to around 10% of the previous capacity due to a drop in bookings as well as numerous entry restrictions.

IAG is considering accelerating the retirement of older aircraft in the fleet – including some B747-400s, A330s, and A340-600s – to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

IATA says global airlines will not start to recover from the crisis until 4Q 2020 and any rebound will be short-lived if there is a new winter wave of coronavirus. The industry will burn US$61 billion in cash in 2Q 2020 because of a 70% drop in traffic and revenue. Airlines are set to post a collective net loss of $39 billion this quarter.

Kenya Airways has sought an undisclosed sum from the government to help to cover critical costs such as payment of staff salaries.

Philippine Airlines and other domestic carriers have written to their government seeking help, saying measures imposed globally to contain the coronavirus pandemic threaten their survival.

Qantas insists it should get a support package of US$2.5 billion from the government to ‘level playing field’ if Virgin Australia gets a bailout.

Southwest Airlines is urging employees to keep cutting expenses wherever possible as it evaluates federal loan and cash payments. Capacity will be reduced in April 2020, with 50 older B737s to be parked.

The airline will cut more than 40% of flights from 03 May through 05 June 2020 amid a sharp decline in travel demand from the pandemic. The airline said will fly 2,000 flights a day, down 1,700 over normal levels.

TAP Air Portugal will forward a request to join the lay-off procedure, a measurement covering all professional categories, including pilots and flight attendants.

The airline will have its “strategic position” safeguarded by the state, who will do what it can to save the airline, including recapitalization and possible nationalisation.

Thai Airways International will not collapse, says Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, who dismissed rumours of impending lay-offs.

Ukraine International Airlines seeks a concessional loan from a state bank to help it mitigate the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. UIA could lose US$60 million in 2020.

Virgin Australia Holdings is seeking a government loan of US$863 million to help it weather the coronavirus crisis, with the government able to take a stake if the loan isn’t repaid in two to three years.

Brussels airlines is not a belgian airlines, they can get their help from germany.
Now they could argue help is needed for belgian employees, fair, but all sectors are suffering... and just for example, there 2x more dentists than brussels airlines employees
