The topic is about the impact, not only the cancellations. Very relevant contribution, I’d say.

Airlines are allways allowed to cancel a flight. But EU-Rule 261/2004 allways applies, no matter what the reason for the cancellation is.

When a flight is cancelled, airlines must allways give the passengers the choice between a refund and a rebooking.

When a flight is cancelled within two weeks before flight date, airlines must also pay the indemnity (€250-€600) from 261/2004 Article 7. They don't have to pay this indemnity when the reason for the cancellation is a strict order from an authority. Latest example: SAS cancelling flights to northern Italy as a result of a negative travel advice from the Swedish government.

A general travel advice "be aware" is no extrordinary circumstance, allowing to void the compensation. And "low demand due to corona fear" certainly is no extraordinary circumstance neither. Most airlines seems to respect this, as they cancel flights two weeks before schedule.

IAG said the group was sticking with all its aircraft orders, as chief executive Willie Walsh believes the slump in travel demand due to coronavirus is temporary.

Norwegian has almost halved the Stock Exchange this year as a result of coronavirus. Danske Bank expects income to fall 11% in 2020, doubling of loss before tax to US$355 million. The carrier will be forced into new debt negotiations and also a possible new capital raising, says the bank.
