Re: Update SN A330 fleet
Why did SFU go first?
It was the youngest of the 3 remaining A330-200's.
But I guess it had the highest number of flight hours and cycles?

Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
Regarding the medium haul fleet, I wonder how SN will proceed : will they put on hold the A320s over the A319s?
Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
Difficult question as it is too early to guess how traffic will resume when the corona crisis will be over. But I guess it will be more or less like at the beginning of SN Brussels Airlines (or rater DAT) after the bankruptcy of Sabena. The airline started with only small Avro RJ85 and RJ100 aircraft. As traffic grew, they added 3 A319s, and then more of the same, and only much later the A320s. One can imagine a similar scenario at the end of the crisis.brusselsairlinesfan wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 21:10 Regarding the medium haul fleet, I wonder how SN will proceed : will they put on hold the A320s over the A319s?

Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
Hi,
Then ... cheap leased fast filling aircraft...
But now.. no more 'small' aircraft, no cheap leases...
All cheap? small leases were send away..
So level field is quite different after the crisis...
Not a big issue of economy resumes quickly..
Guess a big chunk of A320 must leave asap...
But if economy won't return quickly.. :/
Travel bans extended until july/August... Spain closed for months... ??
Luckily oil is cheap enough to heal quicker...
No such thing of a big return to normal I guess.. :/

In that way, do you mean that brussels airlines could retain all of their 319s and axe mostly their 320s ?sn26567 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 22:01Difficult question as it is too early to guess how traffic will resume when the corona crisis will be over. Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
I have the same thought. The A320 is too big. Keep only a few of them for routes like Tel Aviv.brusselsairlinesfan wrote: ↑13 Apr 2020, 02:59In that way, do you mean that brussels airlines could retain all of their 319s and axe mostly their 320s ?sn26567 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 22:01Difficult question as it is too early to guess how traffic will resume when the corona crisis will be over. The A319 is more then big enough as the demand in the next months, and maybe full year, will be low.
Starting smaller, smaller airplanes and grow in future
Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
I will even repeat my own words of a couple of months ago. The SN fleet is missing a small airplane for the thinner routes. OK, this will be not for soon as no money, reboot, etc.Atlantis wrote: ↑13 Apr 2020, 12:43I have the same thought. The A320 is too big. But in a few years it would be a really good idea to have the A220-100 in the fleet. Max 100 pax. Good for thinner routes and no need to have expensive lease contracts like City jet.
Besides this, the backbone with the A319 end a few A330 for dense routes.
This to keep it in the Airbus family and lower costs.
But like I said, in a few years
Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
maybe Lufthansa sends in some CRJ's from Germany to help out their Belgian daughter (if they'll have too many of them)

Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
There are 7 or 8 to be sold as not in plan for the Future.
But this would increase local complexity, so better to stay with 1 family and this is the A320.
Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
It's a difficult balance: uniformity and only A320, with the risk of having underfilled planes, versus having a few CRJ's or similar and making flights easier to be profitable, but having a mixed fleet.oldblueeyes wrote: ↑23 Jul 2020, 08:03There are 7 or 8 to be sold as not in plan for the Future.

Re: Brussels Airlines' fleet renewal
True.
There is no right or wrong, but just acceptable compromises.
But let's see how things look like top-down:
The Group wants to reduce the number of aircraft by approx 100 and maintain the number of flown paxkm. It means generally upgauging. For sure this will be adjusted to post-crisis demand, but this is the trend.
Cut of the low end - the Q400 fleets are retired - Eurowings not coming back (was anyhow scheduled for end of 2021) and Austrian retiring the last turboprops end of next year. Citylines' CRJ will become the smallest size.
Simplyfing the fleets - we can see this best at Austrian - E195 and A320 on shorthaul, with the A319 being phased out. But, we speak there still about a company carrying twice as many pax as Brussels.
Internal availabilities - as the group would force in the coming years cash compression, unlikely that external aircraft will be leased, further more available fleet will be flown till the end of their meaningfull commercial lifetime. Having that said, the easiest option is to replace outgoing leasings with an appropriate mix of Lufthansa owned A319 and A320, depending on demand and network.
A E195 and A320 fleet similary to Austrian would mean a A319 fleet for Dolomiti - they were looking after this before the crisis, but not anymore the case yet. CRJ900 and Airbus might be to high from cost per seat prospective, given the LCC competition in the market and thus pressure on lower cost per seat, balancing everything more towards the A320.
Looking towwards the Lf before Corona, the 319 would have been the better choice. Maybe in the future as well, at least as transition model.
Of course the A223 might be ideal with cost per seat similar to the A320NEO and better size for the local market, but realistically there is no capital available for such an investment now.
