2019 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY REVIEW: A YEAR OF DIFFICULT QUESTIONS

To70’s annual Civil Aviation Safety Review examines accidents to large passenger aircraft used by most travellers. It includes all causes, whether technical failure, human error or unlawful interference. Despite a number of high profile accidents this year’s fatal accident rate is lower than the average of the last five years.
“We need to retain our focus on the basics that make civil aviation so safe”

FEWER FATAL ACCIDENTS IN 2019

In 2019 there were 86 accidents, 8 of which were fatal, resulting in 257 fatalities (see our methodology below). In 2018 there were 160 accidents, 13 of which were fatal, resulting in 534 fatalities. These follow a historic low in 2017 with only two fatal accidents involving regional turboprops (out of 48 accidents) that resulted in the loss of 13 lives.
Despite two high-profile accidents this past year, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX and an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet, and an accident to a Fokker 100 just before the year's end, fatal accidents to large passenger aircraft remain rare events. Only two other accidents, a piston aircraft in March and a turboprop in November, resulted in more than 10 casualties.
An estimated 4,2% growth in air traffic for 2019 over 2018 means that the fatal accident rate for large aeroplanes in commercial air transport is just 0.18 (2018: 0.30) fatal accidents per million flights. That is an average of one fatal accident every 5.58 million flights.

Ben-Gurion emergency: The plane took off with a burning engine

The Rwanda Air Boeing 737 aircraft, which was supposed to fly from Ben Gurion to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, was delayed for an unknown time due to a technical malfunction. According to the Sieve Bet radio station, the engine caught fire during acceleration before takeoff.

Onboard there were more than 100 passengers - all citizens of Israel. After identifying the malfunction, they were urgently dropped off the liner and returned to the terminal.

Radio correspondent Sharon Idan posted on his Twitter photo of a plane with a burning engine.

There are conflicting reports that a B737-400 from Afghan Ariana Airlines has crashed after take off from Kabul. Press reports mention it's AFG507A.

That would suggest it may be FG507, callsign AFG507:
https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flig ... 7#23a9d7fa
however, that's not a 737-400 but a 767-200ER.

Afghan Ariana Airlines apparently also denies a crash of one its aircraft/flights.

CRL Charleroi Airport, 16th February 2020, at 22h40 local, during deboarding of Ryanair flight FR1303 Napoli-Charleroi:

"...after a male passenger exited the airplane and was climbing down the airstairs, he slipped, tumbled down the stairs, seemed to grab the railing on one hand, causing him to spin around and continue the fall on his back, eventually landing head first backwards. The passenger (age 38, average weight and height, and regular flyer with FR) carried a small bag in one hand and appears on the video to hold the safety railing with the right hand before the fall. He was not the first to exit the airplane. The passenger suffered a severe concussion and a head wound that required stitching. He was evacuated to the hospital..."
