China might not be the ideal place to expand business for the moment. Which destinations are they looking for? Wuhan?

Qatar Airways will withdraw all of its B777s (B777LR and B777-300ER) by 2024, in addition to the A330s and A320s. It also plans to withdraw its B787-8, which will be replaced by B787-9. The B777 will be replaced by the B777X and the A320Ceo will be replaced by the A321Neo.

But the airline will not take delivery of planes until at least 2022, there will surely be a big drop in capacity, for at least 2-3 years.

Only CDG and London record "significant" demand

Qatar Airways expects its new B787-9s to take off in 2021, with a fully-private business class seat which is a “new variant” of the Qsuite, to operate three weekly flights from Doha to Toronto from 04 July 2020 with A350-900.

Iberia and Qatar Airways are doing code share in Africa. So far, from what I've seen:

Doha-Kigali (Rwanda)
Doha-Entebbe (Uganda)
Doha-Nairobi (Kenya)

Like Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian and Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways has taken advantage of the withdrawal of European companies since the 2000s, in Africa (even if in recent years they have reopened or opened routes) as well as the weakness of African airlines, to develop in Africa.

Qatar Airways has just launched a new route to Africa this year, after Accra and Abuja. This is Luanda, Angola. Added to this is a share agreement with Air Canada, which has just launched a Toronto Doha. So from Montreal or Toronto, you no longer necessarily need to go through Brussels or Paris, to go to East or Southern Africa

Qatar Airways therefore now serves:

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, Djibouti, Somalia, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Angola, Mozambique, Seychelles , Namibia, South Africa.

The company has postponed the launch of routes to Zambia, Cameroon and Gabon. I think that in the future, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Mauritius will be on the list.

Qatar Airways official told Jeune Afrique that Africa would be the continent that could help them overcome the crisis

Thierry Antinori (Qatar Airways): "It's now or never to win markets in Africa" https://translate.google.com/translate? ... n-afrique/

We can understand B Smith who said he wanted to clean up the African network. How AF can be competitive on CDG Djibouti, with 1 flight per week in A330 (day stop at JIB). While Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights (at least before covid19), in A320 or B737. We will see the African strategy of B Smith

"After Ben Smith became CEO of Air France-KLM last year, he looked at Air France’s Africa network, one of the company’s jewels. France no longer rules much of the continent, but Air France retains air rights other airlines covet.

Smith didn’t like what he saw. In his previous job, as chief operating officer of Air Canada, he preferred simplicity and consistency, and Air France’s network is, well, complicated. Many routes operate less than daily, and some go in a circle."
