Re: Trivia 2019 (miscellaneous news)

Post by lucas »

Aviation24 already posted an article following reports of an incident at Amsterdam Schiphol airport.
Now I read on Facebook following reaction on an article from a Belgian newspaper:
Er is een kaping aan de gang op Schiphol. Drie mensen met een mes bedreigen het kabine personeel en eisen vertrek v B737.
*KLU actions*
F16 (QRA 2x) zojuist opgestegen om eventuele maatregelen te nemen.
*Other actions*
- Arrestatieteam is onderweg.
- Grote paniek in het vliegtuig.
In English: Three people tried to hijack an aircraft (but he states it is a B737 instead of an A330 as said in the article of Aviation24).
The person states in an other reaction that he heard this from a friend of him working at Amsterdam.
I don't know what to believe of what he sais, but it is clear there is something serious happening!

EDIT: Now I also saw tweets passing by of people stating that it is an attempt to hijack

It seems that the captian of the flight (UX1094, Air Europa) used the hijack code (code500). He did this during boarding, 27 passengers and the crew were already onboard. Boarding stopped. There is no contact with the captain. (tweet posted 8:07pm)

False hi-jacking alarm on an Air Europa Airbus A330 at Amsterdam Schiphol

Post by jan_olieslagers »

hm, can we still classify this story under the "trivia"?
It seems that the captian of the flight (UX1094, Air Europa) used the hijack code (code500).
(and, if some gentle degree of notpocking may be allowed, instead of "code 500" perhaps "squawk 7500" would be clearer/more appropriate?)

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reports that all (27) passengers and the crew have safely disembarked.

This might indeed fit better in a new topic.
Can one of the moderators make a new one, and place these posts in the new topic?
I have some kind of a feeling that there will be said a lot about this event...

#AirEuropa Info Falsa Alarma.

Air Europa says: sorry guys, someone in the cockpit pushed a wrong button.

Indeed, an error with huge consequences....

Mooohahaha! if that was the case, really, the messages can well remain in the "trivia" thread.

And of course it is all too cheap too ridicule others' errors, still this poor amateur pilot has well learned the lesson to first "standby" the transponder, then set the new squawk, then "un-standby". But yes, of course, shit happens, all of us make errors sooner or later, and let us be happy that nothing worse happened.

If it's just a "wrong button pushed", where did the rumour (on Twitter etc: https://twitter.com/flightradar24/statu ... 2250992642) about 3 men with knives come from... That's oddly specific.

always crosscheck your actions
Ha! That's easy to say if you're always two in the cockpit ;) !
Too much cross-checking one's self can lead to nasty damage to the brain, so my AME warned me ....

(AME: "aviation medical examiner", the doctor who delivers one's medical "fit to fly" certificate).

you cannot count on a 2nd invisible pilot to cross check your gear is extended, right?
Sure, but it does help to fly a fixed-gear plane ;) In all seriousness, though, you are of course entirely right.

Hello,
Could you please share the Facebook source of that original message indicating 3 knifemen?
I'm interested to further investigate where this fake news comes from. It is very specific and obviously made up. Same applies to "great panic onboard". Chances are people did not even know what was happening.

It's one of the reactions on the first out of three articles (at19:58) posted on this facebook-page. The reaction is written by Wouter Debruyne. You'll see it.

Very interesting... This is fake news being created right under our nose and suprising to see how quickly it is taken over as confirmed.

When a calamity happens, a tsunami of information starts. Those who are involved don't give details till the situation is cleared (like the Dutch Marechaussee Police: "an incident is going, we are aware"). News sites hence rely on non-official information, mostly based upon hearsay and hear-hearsay. Some sites publish a scoop, even when they can't double check their information. Example: this tweet from Internetradio Radio Nostalgie Nederland: "...Vliegtuigkaping #Schiphol volgens insiders is er een kaping gaande aan Pier D. Het zou gaan om 3 verdachten met messen. Nader bericht volgt..." (relevant for your question: "volgens insiders" = according to insiders).
https://twitter.com/RadioNostal/status/ ... 2034059265

Some other newssites take over that news, and amend "according to insiders" into "according to non verified sources".
https://schipholregio.nl/mogelijke-kapi ... live-blog/

Euh... Or maybe the above is vice versa?! Schipholregio.nl with the scoop, and Radio Nostalgie Nederland with the copy/paste?

Now, to the birth of fake news: some editors from other news sites, who don't have time read the full phrase because they also want to read 100 other reports in 5 minutes, don't read the word "unverified" and only copy/paste "3 men with knives".

It happens all over the world. Example: whenever there is a mass shooting in the U.S., first reports allways mention "multiple shooters".
