SN was virtually bankrupt, it may have been cheap money, but cheap money for something which is worth close to nothing is still expensive.
Again and again and again: without Lufthansa SN would be dead and buried years ago.

When will we learn more about this "Reboot" plan? End of september or end of 2019?

I assume something in between probably before something substantial will be known on a large scale (=external communication and/or leaks from staff talking to media).

Latest news from the hospital :
SN299 to ABJ was to be operated by OO-SFF today.
Early this morning, the flight departure time was postponed to 14:00, then 14:30.
At 11:30, SFF was replaced by SFG. Half an hour later, the flight was cancelled.

Today Golf still doesn't feel fit to operate SN277 to Accra and will stay in bed.
She is to run ABJ again tomorrow 22SEP.

Plus ça change, moins ça change.

OO-SFG remains in bed today.
Should be OK to fly SN255 OUA/ABJ tomorrow.

Last evening, according to Flightstats.com, Golf has been replaced by Delta on the Abidjan service of today.
But 3 hours later as SFD was put on the JFK service, she was replaced by Foxtrot for OUA/ABJ.
But because Foxtrot had been planned for Dakar, it is OO-SFK that was put on line for this SN205. This flights is labelled on FR24 and at DSS as "Eurowings" of course.

But today a Eurowings aircraft came to the rescue of SN hospital ... which is already a breakthrough ... ;)

Except that it's not an EW aircraft, it's an SN aircraft used for EW under ACMI (SN registred, SN crew, SN everything except the 'look and feel'). When there's spare capacity in DUS and SN needs it in BRU, it can (and will) be used. µ
But obviously you don't always have an idle A330 in DUS either, so that's only a solution on some cases, but it has happened quite a lot of times already this year that a DUS based A330 (or even A340 in the beginning) was used in BRU.

Also worth noting is that SN succeeded in having ten (10) chicks out today.
All flights operated and with no or little significant delays.

In various news reports it's written that Thomas Cook didn't pay it's bills from SN in weeks. This must be millions and counting. Does SN have enough liquidity to cover this for some time?

Well, I suppose SN didn't all of a sudden realise Thomas Cook Belgium wasn't paying their bills, so I assume they are already in the knowing for quite some time and take this mishap into account when forming their reboot plan.

OO-SFZ flew as SN9903 to Dublin this Monday 23SEP.
Maintenance?

From our Regulars, OO-SFU stayed in bed today. SN467 to KGL-EBB cancelled.

The Reboot Plan will need to be rebooted !
Not only the "Reboot Plan" will need to be rebooted...all the fleet will need to bee rebooted too. How LH can accept that ?

SN has lost the battle of Africa

Post by BrightCedars »

I've been contributing in various topics over the past weeks and months and figured a dedicated topic will be more beneficial. The title is provocative but it is my view on the situation and is intended at fostering discussions.
  • SN has had some growth on its existing markets in Africa over the past years. However their network is focused on destinations with some historical link to Belgium or the Francophone world
  • Home competition is strong: Air France-KLM remains strong despite facing some of the challenges listed here
  • Away competition is increasing: Air Senegal, Egyptair, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc to name a few
  • Network competition is increasing: Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines are all siphoning Europe-Africa traffic
  • Alliance dynamics are not maximized: No partnership with ET or TK; LH & LX still have own flights
  • Fleet isn't fit for battle: A330-300 is too large to compete on number of destinations and frequency
  • Northerly location of BRU isn't optimal for a hub serving Africa to begin with
Let the debate get started!

Brussels Airlines cancels more than 100 flights in October to holiday destinations, thereby also affecting 3500 of its own customers:

Like I thought. This routes are not financially viable without a tour operator buying up x amounts of seats

Like I have said already many weeks before but all the time we could hear from certain members that it was financially very good. Hmmm yeah....
Agree, SN could use their planes during off period like weekends, but it was not gaining them anything as serious troubles now

This reboot plan really has to be drastic bcs the fleet is to big too, meaning A319 and A320 on certain destinations. Drastic effort needs to be done to survive.

Well yeah, SN was standing still bcs of the killing EW project. They lost time while others were investing in Africa by opening routes by themself.

A lot of companies realise that Africa is a continent of the future. Now you have to invest to harvest later. Certain cities like Kinshasa will become super cities. Meaning that the population will become as big as certain North America cities.

There you have to be, there is still a possibility to earn money. OK, make debts, invest in suitable planes for certain routes, it will give you the profit later. But you need to do and act.

The alliance under LH was not giving the benefits. All of them are flying to Africa, they are competitors of each other even under the same flag. The stories that LH would move 3 to 4 planes to BRU to open more routes to Africa were just a dream, to say in proper words

The future of SN is in Europe, Africa and The States. The States to bring as much of origin African people via BRU to Africa and vs

I guess the best advice is wait and see. SN cancels these flights as a precautionary measure because it doesn't know what will happen with TC itself. As long as it isn't clear what happens there, SN may decide to cancel certain flights. But right now, they communicated fairly early that they are going to cancel flights next month. If necessary, I think they'll communicate as soon as they know more for November.
