You could see it also as SN will be the replacement of Air Transat. Air Transat is also flying seasonal but we don't know for the moment if they will continue that.

Otherwise we will have three carriers suddenly for one route, from time to time three times daily. Is a bit much.

So I predict that Air Transat will discontinue in some time

Times are now also confirmed. Flight from YUL will come in at 08.40 at BRU. The outbound flight will be in the afternoon at 15 o'clock.

Air Canada will use for YUL and YYZ the B787-8. This means less seats than when they flew with the A330 but an overall increase in seats as Air Canada is adding a second destination to BRU

A new airline at Brussels Airport. Wizz Air will commence flights from Budapest to Brussels Airport as of next summer season. Flights will be operated with an A321 NEO. That means heavy competition for SN is on the way: LOT will launch flights to Budapest, and now also Wizz Air.

A definite increase in compeition on BRU-BUD!
It looks like a transferral of Wizz's evening CRL-BUD to Brussels BRU.

wondering if they'll expand in BRU too, like Ryanair did a few years ago and is still doing.

I can confirm, yes.

And this was the second carrier who we wanted to announce their new route.

Still others will follow for 2020

Interesting.

how exactly attracting direct competition on existing regional routes fits with your frequent complaints about the homebased airlines not building a more global network, is beyond me.

You realise more than I do probably that all those much wanted intercontinental routes often need to be filled with connecting passengers to make them durably sustainable, yet it becomes increasingly difficult for intercontinental network airlines to serve BRU or for Brussels Airlines to look at more intercontinental routes if those all important feeding flights they rely on in BRU are increasinly made impossible to be operated profitably?

The strategy of Brussels Airport seems to be rather muddy to me...

IMHO you can't bet on 2 horses.. at least not in the long run?

BRU is an open airport. No carrier is excluded. If you do so, legal complaint will be against you.

Of course, if a carrier will come with an MD11 or an older Boeing, it will be a polite request to fly with newer aircraft regarding noise and emissions.

But as I said, no one is excluded. Competition is good as it give more freedom to pax to chose.

The reactions received today on the first flight and destination were very good.

A more global is already and will be more... Just be patient, OK?

I understand, but it seems BRU does more than just refuse to refuse a certain type of customer.

From a regional customer perspective, on the short term, and on a route-per-route basis, I agree with you

I am not so sure it's still in the long term interest of both the airport and the wider community to stimulate ever more competition on already served regional routes. In the end it's simply canibalising your existing customers to the point they cut back, not just on those routes which see too much competition, but also on their wider network...

I wonder if BRU has ever done a long term analysis of its strategy, or whether it is just annual result and growth driven? It's an honnest question, because frankly I just don't see the added value of this particular route, as it is already being served by 2 different airlines from BRU...

So, KLM is going to drop one of its five daily flights between Brussels Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol and replace it by a train. Not via Brussels Airport but from the railway stations in Brussels.
