And in an attempt to keep information balanced allow me to repeat my previous post :

Oh, by the way, I almost forgot to mention it :
https://www.airport-technology.com/news ... ng-system/

Vanderlande has received a contract to upgrade the baggage handling system at Brussels Airport in Belgium.
The contract is a part of a 20-year framework agreement signed between Vanderlande and Brussels Airport Company (BAC) in March 2019.
Upgrades will allow the airport to cater to its future requirements. The airport expects the annual passenger traffic to grow from the present 25 million to 40 million within the next 25 years.

OK maybe it could/should have been done earlier, but let's recognize that efforts are made to correct these unacceptable breakdowns.
Vanderlande is a world leader in baggage handling system; not really the cheapest.

Perhaps a typically Belgian approach: push every problem before you for just as long as you can ever manage...
But in this respect, too, other countries and companies might be not much better.
We should be content that, as reported, improvements are to be implemented by a company of solid reputation.

Well, the story continues. Another, or the same, technical problem with the luggage belt system today... it’s really becoming a bit too much now.

UPDATE : Our teams have resolved the issue and the bagage system is now being rebooted. We expect normal operations to be possible around noon.

If they mention "rebooted", that sounds like it is an issue with a computer/server. May I suspect it is a "W_nd_ws" server?

I read on De Standaard that a strap around a suitcase broke off and as a result blocked the bagage system.

Indeed a joke. A very sad joke..

BRU is a sad example of the neo-capitalistic mentality: shareholders (and top management) first; customers, personnel, suppliers and contractors last.

The dividends were enormous in the last years:
2013 67mio
2014 99,4mio
2015 45,5mio
2016 109 mio (the year of the terror attacks !!!)
2017 74mio
2018 93mio (on a turnover of 595mio €)

Everything goes to the shareholders and big bonus to some top managers.

I propose that there should be a law that protects PAX rights better.
Compensation missing baggage : 100€ per person per day.

This way, the greedy Sharehokders would also carry some responsibilty for the treatmrnt of their customers.

4 times in 3 months is indeed a shame.

If that be true, there's little surprise the system is so delicate: I should think a broken strap must be a rather common occurrence; if it can block the system so badly that a reboot is required then it seems a very poor system indeed.

and job well done by TUI Fly having all its flights depart with all luggage on board (with substantial extra effort from within the company to compensate for the failing or should I say ailing BRU airport infrastructure).

And hmm, I have no links whatsoever with TUI

Those are big numbers indeed. Compare i.e. with AMS dividend: 117mio on a turnover of 1500mio.

The teachers of Ontario must be happy!

UPDATE: This morning, a suitcase with a badly attached belt has been entered in the Brussels Airport baggage system and has caused damage, which has caused the system to be down for three hours. From 9 am onwards, airport operations have been gradually resuming. As of 3 pm, flights are leaving normally with baggage.

We sincerely apologise to all of our passengers for the inconvenience. We do our utmost best to deliver the baggage that has stayed behind at Brussels Airport to its final destination as soon as possible.

Compensation for the passengers should be twice the difference between a ticket with luggage and a ticket without.

Somehow TUI managed this afternoon to get the bags on carts in the departure lounge and in the plane on the tarmac...

Congratulations!

Stij

PS maybe other airlines as well but for TUI I have a testimony...
