They move fast.
But are we moving fast here ?
3 years to be ready ? Really ?
In 3 years they build a 3000km of high speed train network.

I wonder how these trains handle the difference of rail gauge between Western Europe and Russia/China.

I also wonder where in Liege these trains arrive: there still is no track at Liege Airport.

* the same way that airplanes change their altimeters from "feet" to "metres" when entering Russian airspace :) ?

* for things that must really go quick, there is a system of swapping the bogies; this was used for passenger trains between Spain and France, and perhaps it still is

* containers are usually transferred to other waggons

And btw China uses the same gauge as Western Europe and North America ("standard gauge"); it is Russia and its former satellites that have a different gauge. (This was done on purpose when railways were created, for fear that, in case of war, it would be too easy for an invader to rapidly move large quantities of material and troops into the country.) So two transloading operations are required. There are talks of creating a standard gauge railway all through Kazachstan, but the cost is immense.

No more Chinese tourists, the number of passengers reduced from 300,000 to 170,000: the duty-free shop of Liege Airport, operated by the Polish duty-free specialist Baltona, closes its doors. TUI fly still operates from Liege Airport, but the number of passengers makes it unsustainable and unprofitable to open a shop for a handful of people per day.

Sales of perfumes at -40%, for those who are interested in a last buy!

Duty-free is useless for the remaining intra-European flights and cargo... as we all know. No need for passengers parking lot either :-(

Liège is doomed for business: too far away from an International airport and not enough business hotels :-( But, this is a different/political story

Nice! If FedEx wants to get rid of the ASL Belgium 747s, at least there is now another airline with a 747 on the Belgian registry.
