According to the Air Niugini Press Statement it was not an overshoot.
Not that it makes much difference though, they ended up in the drink anyhow, but they landed short of the runway.

Approach over sea or flat, featureless terrain can be tricky if no PAPI is available.

Chuuk Airport is the ideal place to practice this.
Just Touch and Go, Touch and Go, ...
Sort of Chuuk-Chuuk training.

Sorry, just couldn't resist.
Glad they all came out safely.

UPDATE: Air Niugini flight #PX73 lost height shortly before landing on runway 04 at Chuuk Airport, Micronesia (PTTK) and ended up in the water. All 47 on board escaped and were rescued. The weather deteriorated before landing.

They must have interpreted "drop-off straight to the beach" a bit too strictly...

The flight had to divert the previous evening, when PX-72 POM-TKK diverted to PNI. Then in the morning, the same aircraft repositionned as PX-73 from PNI to TKK = end destination PX-72.

Aircraft:

Diversion flight on the 27th - the dotted line is computer generated by FR24. The aircraft probably attempted to land at TKK first (my guess):

F-35 crashes for the first time

" The U.S. military suffered its first crash of an F-35 aircraft in the 17 year history of the high-profile fighter jet program, the same day the Pentagon announced it had struck a deal with defense contractor Lockheed Martin to drive down costs for the next batch of planes to a historical low.
The crash of the Marine Corps variant of the F-35, known as the F-35B Lightning II, occurred Friday at 11:45 a.m. outside Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina, according to the Marine Corps. The service did not give a suspected cause for the crash, saying the incident remained under investigation.
“The U.S. Marine pilot safely ejected from the single-seat aircraft and is currently being evaluated by medical personnel,” the Marines said in a statement. “There were no civilian injuries.”
The aircraft, which cost more than $100 million, belonged to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, which trains Marine pilots for combat with the F-35. "

A small single-engine Cessna plane kills three people (2 adults and a child) and injures 8 more after crashing into a crowd at an airfield near Fulda in the German state of Hesse.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Four passengers in the plane have been taken to a hospital.

((sorry for nit-picking)) make that "Four occupants" - C172 has four seats, and we may hope and trust there was a pilot, leaving room for only 3 passengers.

That said, and more to the point: this airfield, with its rich history, is not the easiest to fly into, as I understand. The runway has a bit of slope, so that landings are only on 24 and take-off is only from 06. Was 160 HP sufficient, with 4 people on board, on a relatively hot day? As I read the media, the pilot tried to go around on landing and couldn't make it work - RIP.
