Future long haul destinations Brussels Airport

Post by Atlantis »

Léon Verhallen gave an interview with Luchtvaartnieuws Magazine.

Primera Air is for Brussels Airport the new segment which was not available yet: LC long haul.
It is a message to UA and SN who are not expanding further at BRU. UA is expanding at AMS and other European airports, but not at BRU while they had the intention to open an evening NY flight.
But if not they, others will fill this gap. It is very clear that Primera Air will receive carte blanche.

Further more on the wish list. Destinations which we know already and most likely, Singapore by Singapore Airlines will be the next new one. It's only a matter of time and probably of new type aircraft they are receiving.

Seoul, Taipei, other Chinese destinations, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, San Fransisco and San Paulo are all very high on the list.

BRU should encourage JL to come with their new LCC subsidiary and to 5th freedom to GRU.
This should work very well.

Some Latin American destinations would also be interesting: MEXICO City, BOGOTA, SANTIAGO de CHILE, PANAMA...
Latin America has an imortant Middle Class now; this people want to travel.
Europe is by far the dream destination (after they have visited Miami, NY, etc.

More destinations in India would be also welcome; On AI we can't rely as it will take too long and also LH will never approve this as they work close with them.
SN will probably deploy more in Africa.
The only one who I see deploying more from India is Indigo Air. As next year the first LC long haul will start, they are maybe also more willing and can connect some two extra Indian destinations.

I remember to have read a few months ago that CRL was mentioned as a future A330 detination of IndiGo.

Well, there is nothing wrong with dreaming I'd say ;)

I honestly don't see what BRU would have to offer to those airlines to start a route. In due time no connecting options anymore and a rather limited O&D market. Some government traffic maybe, but only to select destinations...

As SN/LH decided to axe Mumbai from the SN network, there is no connection anymore from BRU with India.
This makes free space for a new carrier on this route. Let's hope that Indigo or an other one can fill this gap

Indigo might be interested now to fly to BRU instead of CRL..(eventually!)

I talked to Frédéric Paepe, the SN Director of Flight Operations this afternoon. LH didn't decide anything. SN took the decision independently: the route has never been profitable.

Another interview.
Lim Ching Kiat, managing director of air hub development at Changi Airport Group, tells Routesonline about the airport's network hopes. 17 September 2018
"CAG is keen to explore direct links to Brussels, Madrid, Oslo, and Vienna – all of which have strong origin-destination demand with Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific regions."

IndiGo and SpiceJet are again showing intrest in longhaul flights (USA and Europe). IndiGo mentioned Brussels in their plans for flights to Europe last year. They will most likely not open a route because of COVID-19, but can we at least expect Some renewed intrest from these carriers?

As SN has to focus on North America and Africa, we can't expect from them a move.
Air India is for many years not in a good financial condition and LH wants to keep them flying on FRA instead of an extra flight to BRU

So most likely another carrier, and not part of Star, makes more chance, especially IndiGo.

But the market share of diamands is decreasing in Antwerp and is growing much faster now in India, especially the rough ones. So that demand is lower now. The only other reason is a shift from China to India regarding industry.

So there is a chance but BRU will not be the first one. As always, they look first to the airports nearby

To come back to this topic. Vistara, India, just announced that they are going to fly to Europe. LHR will be the first destination with 6 flights a week with the B787-9. Also in the planning are CDG and FRA but those authorities had still to give their permission.
Vistara has 9 B787 on order

It was reported earlier and the article is also 1 month old.

The route is postponed, which is obvious. Better times to come

United just announced new long haul routes, also to Africa. If passengers can fly non stop between the US and Africa BRU won’t be needed anymore. Also last year people were pretty sure that United would launch flights between SFO and BRU. This was before

Quite a stretch... UA will start flying to three African destinations, of which only one is flown to from BRU: ACC.

LOS and JNB are the other destinations.

Only Johannesburg is the new destination, in Africa. I guess they want to take the advantage of the gap, left by South African Airways on IAD-JNB and IAD-Accra and proably to compete with the Atlanta-JNB service operated by Delta. Delta and United also served Cape Town. Delta also serves Accra, from New York and Lagos, from New York and Atlanta.

They have already served Accra and Lagos, in the past. Lagos was served from Houston and Accra was already served from IAD. They just resume service IAD-Accra route. UA has replaced North American Airlines, which operated services between Accra / Lagos and USA

It's quite interesting, to see non stop routes between Africa and USA are once again increasing, after years of decrease. Asky is probably the biggest winner, in West Africa to feed Star Alliance airlines flights to USA, at Lome, Abidjan, Accra and Lagos.
