General Aviation incidents & accidents in Belgium or with a OO-registration

Post by Passenger »

18th May 2018, Cessna 152, Aérodrome Spa/La Sauvenière:

From the report from Belgiums' AAIU:

"...Ten days before the accident, the student pilot performed a first successful solo flight with 3 touch and goes. A few days after, he made an additional flight with his instructor...

The day of the accident started with a 40 minutes instructional dual flight consisting of touch and goes after which the instructor suggested to perform a few solo touch and goes under his supervision. The active runway was 05 with a right-hand circuit. According to the instructor, all touch and goes were performed with the same flap setting (10° down) for both the landing and take-off. The first touch and go was uneventful. When flying at the end of the final leg of the second circuit the student pilot realized he was a little too high and decided to perform a go around. This was considered by the instructor as a good decision...

The third leg happened uneventfully and was ended by a very good landing according to the instructor. However, after touchdown, when the student pilot applied full power, the aeroplane drifted to the left, hit a runway edge light with the right-hand main wheel and left the concrete runway to roll in the grass of the runway strip. The aeroplane briefly went airborne and the student pilot reacted by closing the throttle. Shortly after the aeroplane violently touched down on the nose landing gear that collapsed. The aeroplane sustained damage to the propeller, the nose landing gear, the engine mount and the firewall. The pilot climbed out uninjured...

Yes. Sounds like a fairly standard accident. Shit happens, as some say... Damage seems very limited, both to the plane (physically) and to the student pilot - except if her/his ego took a big dent, as it shouldn't.

The sorry point is that, this engine driving the prop directly and thus having been well shaken by the prop strike, a lot of work will be required on the engine, and that will cost its bit of money. My own bird has the charm of reduction gear AND a slipper clutch in the Rotax 912 so that - on both HER prop strikes - the engine was unharmed - bless the designers!

It is a nice surprise however to see the accident report published only a couple of months after the accident - one year used to be the usual term. Goe bezig, mobilit!

It was already published on our main site, yet with very little information. Still looking for aircraft type and registration!

Incident at Temploux, 31st October 2017.

A quote from the final report: "...The Cessna 152 made a forced landing after take-off at the aerodrome of Namur-Suarlée (EBNM) due to a loss of power... The cause of the engine malfunction and the subsequent forced landing is the contamination of the carburettor float chamber by a small insect (fly) that obstructed the fuel feed to the main nozzle. The insect entered inside the float chamber of the carburettor via the vent of the float chamber of the carburettor..."

Thanks for info. Small junk in carburettors is a well-known source of trouble, in "small" aviation - one reason more for preferring fuel injection. Which comes with its own issues, of course :(

It seems that this one wasn't reported yet:

09th August 2019, OO-JBM Beech A.36 Bonanza

ASN.net: "...A Beechcraft A36 Bonanza crashed shortly after takeoff from Calvi- Sainte- Catherine Airport (CLY/LFKC) under unknown circumstances into the sea close to the French island Corsica. Both Belgian occupants were seriously injured..."

(Reg OO-JBM was scrapped from the Belgian registry on 11th Sept 2019)

On 27 August 2019, a light sports aircraft (a Morane-Saulnier MS-893 registered OO-VON) crashed next to the runway at Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport. The pilot didn’t survive the impact.

The accident occurred around 16:20. The pilot made a wrong manoeuvre while hooking up an advertising banner, which should have been shown above horse race “Waregem Koerse”, causing the aircraft to crash.

Fuel was leaking from the aircraft due to the crash, but the plane did not catch fire. The fire department is now busy cleaning up the leaked liquid.
