The end? Airbus is drawing up contingency plans to phase out production of the A380, if it fails to win a key order from Emirates.

Indeed: Airbus COO John Leahy: “If we can’t get a deal with Emirates, we will have to shut down the A380 programme”

EK lost much of their credit in Toulouse when they cancelled the A350 order a few years back. Opting in 2017 for the B787 (instead of the A350) put on definite hold any possible or costly development of the A380 EK would wish for. It would need a miracle to save it now.
I will feel sorry when they shut the production line .. seems a waste.

Without EK the A380 would have been history years ago.
Whilst the A380 is a very comfortable aircraft from a passenger viewpoint, it is economically not viable if not operated in a high density configuration. Unfortunately the A380 doesn’t have the performance to operate the longer routes in high density.
The A380 ins’t a solution for airport/airspace saturation either. In the air there is a need for increased separation both terminal and enroute, furthermore it disturbs the ILS signal, which further limits the airport capacity. On the ground it delays taxi operations and restricts parking capacity at terminals.
It is no longer a question if, but when the production line will be shut down.

Yeah, the A380 would be at its best on popular long range fares such as JFK-CDG, but if it remains a rare bird, Airbus won't enjoy mass production cost cuts, and the market will stay centered around more modest planes... I'm afraid that this good looking fat goose isn't going anywhere.

Emirates today announced a US$ 16 billion (AED 58.7 billion) deal for 36 additional Airbus A380 aircraft, with 20 firm orders and 16 options. Emirates’ A380 fleet operates both GE and Rolls-Royce engines, and the airline is evaluating engine options for its latest A380 order.

A lifeline for the A380 !

Seems that John Leahy pulled another rabbit out of his hat before going on retirement :-)

Oh well, it was needed for both parties, Airbus needed the order to keep the line open while EK needed Airbus to keep the line open for the future since there isn't a suitable replacement for the A380 fleet nor is there one in development.

Wow wow ...
"I’m personally convinced more orders will follow Emirates’ example and that this great aircraft will be built well into the 2030s.” (John Leahy, today)
May God (and the airline industry) hear him !

IAG suspended negotiations with Airbus over a possible deal for 10 additional A380s, amid its frustration over delivery delays on the A320neo. Talks may still be revived at a later stage.

Dr. Peters Group (Germany) to strip two A380s for parts after failing to find an airline willing to keep the two ex-SIA superjumbos flying. The engines were leased back to Rolls-Royce (UK), and VAS Aero Services (US) will handle the part-out. DPG plans to sell the Trent 900 engines in 2020.
