EBKT (Kortrijk/Wevelgem) no longer IFR

Post by jan_olieslagers »

Since the last AIRAC update, EBKT (Kortrijk/Wevelgem) is mentioned in the AIP as VFR only. One can suppose the cost of keeping the equipment certified and calibrated was deemed too high. Still, why didn't they put up GPS-based IFR procedures instead?

As you know Kortrijk is an uncontroled aerodrome with no ATC services. Only flight information service (FIS) is provided. Due to the increasing number of business jets coming to Kortrijk, the situation is becoming dangerous, so IFR flights are temporarly not allowed. Belgocontrol is currently studying about providing ATC services at Kortrijk Airport.

Yes you still have to be very careful down there. I was flying once out of ebkt and just after take off we got a tcas ra.

It would be nice to create a CTR.

Belgocontrol will provide air navigation services at the airport of Kortrijk-Wevelgem
As from November Belgocontrol will be active at the international airport of Kortrijk-Wevelgem. The public company will provide flight information as well as meteorological and technical services. In that way, Belgocontrol allows the airport to improve its activities and to perform instrument flights again – among other things thanks to new, satellite navigation-based procedures.
