A Brussels Airlines A330 drops fairing on take-off from Brussels Airport

Roulette russe of the week : Long haul SN 241 Monrovia Freetown BRU...cancelled !

Note from the moderators: This was the beginning of a long story of cancelled or delayed flights. The origin of the problem was only known on 11 May, when the Aviation Herald published a report about the reason for the incident.

We have thus moved many posts to this new topic in order to get a sequence of the events and their explanation.

With some confusion on BRU departures panel this morning and tomorrow's arrivals.

SN241 was not scheduled today!

It's SN203 to Dakar and Banjul which is cancelled, well not really, but replaced by SN1203 to ... Banjul and Dakar! OO-SFX en-route...

Sorry but 30 of april was yesterday and not today...Flight back from Monrovia Freetown was cancelled...but I do not know where is the aircraft.
Today SN203...cancelled but 1203 on the way !
From dataflight24.com, I guess SFU is still in Freetown.

Since 203 was cancelled, I'd think SFX, as SN1203, is on its way to Freetown (+Dakar and/or Banjul), rather than Dakar-Banjul only.

My bet's still on Freetown :) .

Flightradar24 doesn't show any destination for SN1203/SFX; hopefully the pilots know where they are supposed to go. ;)

My mistake! So, only two of the three legs of SN241 were cancelled yesterday. SFU flew normally from BRU-FNA, but not FNA-ROB-BRU.

SN1203/OO-SFX landed at Freetown airport about an hour ago. I assume it carried a crew of SN technicians to take care of SFU which seems to be AOG there since yesterday.

Being AOG in LFW or FNA is not a gift. It's not compareable with an AOG situation at a large international airport that is served by many maintenance organisations that have local stock.

It's not because an aircraft is AOG that it is falling apart. There could be a million smaller issues that keep the aircraft on ground. Even brand new aircraft are AOG now and then. It's probably a big challenge to get the part outthere and that is probably the reason for the large disruption in the sn network from time to time.

btw: I see no cancelled flights. both concerned flights are delayed until the next day which shows sn is commited to these pax (at least to those that did not get rebooked on another flight already).

Fact is, if 2 of your 10 long haul aircrafts are stuck somewhere in Africa and you need +- 9 long haul aircrafts per day, it is maybe a wise decision to or expand your LH-fleet with an extra aircraft to don't have these problems again or you lease quickly a Wamos to stop the domino-effect...

I read today Washington : cancelled on BRU website
I read today Abidjan Cotonou : cancelled on BRU website

I know why : because 2 aircrafts ( 20% of the fleet) are stuck somewhere for small small small problems for sure.

Can I be reminded if SN carries only goods or passengers ? I imagine your face " Sir, the flight is not cancelled but you have to come back tomorrow for a new schedule of the flight  " Hummm...

If you have more, factual, information about the reason for the AOG would you please share with us?

I personally don't but I reckon it could be anything including an engine sucking up FOD or a piece of GSE coming up close and personal with the bird. The latter two examples not reflecting anything wrong with the aircraft but are more prone to happen at some airports than others.

I do not too. I'm not afraid flying SN of course and your explanation for sure is the good one.

What I reproach SN is to have a network too big in relation to its fleet. When there is a problem it shows and the passenger has to bear it, when KL has a problem it is not seen and the passenger does not realize anything.
For that reason I said "roulette russe"...every 10 days...you have a small problem...I'll go back SN long haul when 20 aircrafts will be there.

And I know it's easier to resolve a problem @ BRU or JFK than in ROB.

KLM is one of my favourite carriers, but the above is not correct. They have one 787, unforeseen grounded for a few weeks now, after a stupid ground incident. Result: shortage of aircraft and cancellation of two New York flights last week. They even have to hire a Delta 767-400 now as backup for JFK. Wetlease, no Dutch crew. I'm pretty sure the passengers realize that something is wrong when their KLM crew doesn't speak Dutch.

That's the difference: KLM gets a wet-leased plane from cousin Delta, whilst SN doesn't get any support from "mother" EW or grandma LH!

A Brussels Airlines A330 drops fairing on take-off from Brussels Airport

Post by sn26567 »

The Aviation Herald today published a report on the initial incident and its cause:

A Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration OO-SFU performing flight SN-241 from Brussels (Belgium) to Freetown (Sierra Leone), was climbing out of Brussels' runway 07R when a ground witness phoned police having observed a part falling off a departing aircraft. Police recovered what was subsequently identified a fairing wing to fuselage. ATC informed Brussels Airlines, Brussels Airlines informed ATC after the aircraft landed in Freetown, that the aircraft had arrived without the fairing at the wing root.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Freetown for 48 hours, then continued the journey and service.

Belgium's Accident Investigation Board rated the occurrence a serious incident and is investigating the occurrence.
