Brazil’s Chapecoense football team were among the 72 passengers and nine crew members on board. Defender Alan Ruschel and goalkeeper Marcos Danilo are said to be two of the survivors.

Medellin’s airport confirmed that the aircraft, which departed from Bolivia, was transporting the Chapecoense football team from southern Brazil. They were scheduled to play in the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday (November 30) in Medellin.

The final has been suspended.

But nine crew on an Avro RJ-85?

From Brazil:

Now 76 died. One of the four survivers died in the hospital.
The plane was 17 years old.
The ANAC (Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency), prohibited a direct flight from GRuarulhos to Medellin with LAMIA, due to commercial rights. (Chicago Treaty). The team flew from Guarulhos to Santa-Cruz de la Sierra with a commercial flight (GOL ou LATAM) and then with LAMIA to Medellin.

The final of Sul-America is canceled not posponed.

Very sad news for Chapeco/SC.

In total, 22 players, 28 companions, 22 journalists and nine crew members are believed to have been on board.

So far, only five of the 81 people on board are confirmed alive.

They are: football players: Marcos Danilo, goalkeeper, Alan Ruschel, defender, Jackson Follman, backup goalkeeper, flight stewardess Ximena Suárez and passenger Rafael Gobbato.

The exact cause of the plane crash has not officially been determined. There are unconfirmed reports the plane had run out of fuel, or the plane had suffered an electrical blackout. The narrative so far is that the plane's pilot had asked for an emergency upon arrival and was reportedly given priority landing status. Except the plane never made it to the runway to safely land. According to Colombia national radio:ANOTHER flight asked emergency landing at same moment; it had priority as first one didn't claim emergency...

Brazilian President Michel Temer declares three days of national mourning following the crash of the RJ85 plane.

The black boxes have been recovered in good condition. Let(s hope they will shelve some flight on the reasons for the crash.

Some sources say the plane crashed at a speed above the speed of sound!

The British authority is sending three investigators to Medellin (the Avro is a British-built aircraft).

It seems now more and more likely that the plane plunged after fuel reserve was exhausted.

The pilot of LAMIA Flight 2933, which crashed near Medellin, Colombia, said, "The plane is in total electric failure and without fuel," according to two sources familiar with the investigation who heard audio recordings of conversations between the flight crew and air traffic control.

The audio was published in Colombian media.

After listening to the audio...
I just have to say that I have the greatest respect for the way the controller handled the situation.

I just wonder why the control tower let them wait. If there is already another plane that has started its landing, let it make a go around so they could land. But the smartest is perhaps to wait what officials say instead of a leaked audio tape...

Bolivia's aviation authority DGAC suspends the operational licence of LAMIA airline involved in the Colombia crash, with immediate effect.

Another airplane with technical problems (fuel leak) got priority earlier and LMI-2933, not yet having reported any problems, was instructed to enter the holding some 17 miles from the airfield at FL210, with at least one other airplane in the same holding a few thousand feet below. When troubles began, LMI-2933 first requested to leave the holding and soon after, without clearance, descended out of the holding right through the level of the other plane in the same holding. Events then turned for the worst very quickly.
What still is unclear, why they adopted such an aggressive descend profile (possible with 'gear down' as can be heard in the background during ATC comms) instead of adopting an optimum glide speed/profile, which could have brought them a lot closer to the runway (but probably not on the rwy).
Rather shocking to see all those photo's, even interviews like the one with the trainee female pilot, moments before departure and just a few hours before their demise. I an accident which was totally avoidable, if normal safety standards would have been upheld.

With the severe competition between airlines, especially lcc's, it is only a matter of time for similar things to happen in Europe and elsewhere.

Ryanair already had some emergency landings due to fuel shrtage, I believe ??
Air Asia also, even a crash (for unknown reasons??)

There are more and more rules, for everything, and then you see this 'disruptors', taking market share without respecting ( all ) the rules, and killing the ones who work correctly.

Ryanair, Wow, Uber, Airbnb, internet banks from Iceland and elsewhere,..

Thanks DIBO for the explanation concerning the landing.

But I still think it' strange that you don't take enough fuel with you

The tanks were filled to capacity at departure from Santa Cruz. But Medellin was exactly at the maximum range with a full load.

I think there will be many more contributing factors in this incident coming out over the next few days. The actual reason (fuel starvation) is widely known now. However, the 'human factor' elements leading to this of course will be of most interest to the industry in lessons learned going forward.

Brazilian medias say that originaly, the plane was supposed to refuel at COBIJA Airport.
One of the football player's video, while on the plane, talked about a stop at Cobija.
But the commercial flight from São Paulo to Santa-Cruz de la Sierra arrived late.
At Cobija aiport, there is no light on the runway, so no night flight. So the pilot decided to
fly directly to Medelin.
The other plane, (Viva Colombia) with fuel leak, landed, and airport staff were checking the runway for possible
fuel.... while the Lamia Avro was on a waiting pattern....and burned all its fuel...and crashed.
He could have made it, if there were not a prior emergency landing just before...
