Norwegian in 2016

Norwegian opens first Italian base at Rome Fiumicino

European budget carrier, Norwegian is to strengthen its presence in the Italian market from this summer by opening a new aircraft base at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. This will be the airline’s first base in Italy and 15th across Europe – it will initially be home to two Boeing 737-800 aircraft from March 27, 2016.

Norwegian has been serving the Italian market for over ten years, but first introduced flights into the capital city’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in March 2007 when it inaugurated flights to Rome from Oslo, shortly after adding onward links to Warsaw in Poland - it had previously served Rome’s Ciampino Airport. It now serves seven destinations from Fiumicino, comprising Bergen, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Helsinki, London Gatwick, Oslo, Norway and Stockholm.

Rome is the airline’s largest destination in an Italian network that also includes Catania, Milan, Olbia, Palermo, Pisa and Venice. During the summer 2016 schedule it will account for 64.7 per cent of the airline’s total departure capacity in Italy, according to OAG data, offering around 520,000 seats in and out of Rome.

We are very pleased to open our first Italian base at Fiumicino since the airport plays an important and strategic role in our development plans. Rome is the premier gateway into Italy so not surprisingly, Fiumicino generates two thirds of our passenger volume in Italy. This is why, for the upcoming summer season we will put on sale almost 500,000 seats,” said Bjørn Kjos, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Norwegian.

The new Rome base is part of a continued growth of Norwegian’s activities outside of its Nordic roots. Although its network is currently solely based on short-haul routes, it will offer long-haul connection opportunities to Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland/San Francisco and Orlando via its four European gateways to North America. In the future long-haul services from Rome are under consideration, according to the carrier.

The growth of Norwegian's activities in Italy has been significant - capacity is up an average of 22.0 per cent per year since the start of the decade - it still remains only a small fish in a big pond. The airline is currently only the 22nd largest operator in the country's international market based on last year's schedules with just a 0.8 per cent share of total international capacity.

Norwegian is continuing its fleet renewal in 2016, with the planned delivery of 21 new aircraft. A total of 17 Boeing 737-800s and four 787-9 Dreamliners are due to be delivered this year. Norwegian is also due to receive four Airbus A320 neos that it will lease out. In addition, seven older 737-800s will depart the fleet.

Norwegian to start Paris CDG transatlantic flights?

Norwegian is planning to start long-haul operations out of Paris CDG this summer, France's La Tribune newspaper has reported.

Using its fleet of B787-8s and soon, B787-9s, the LCC is planning to serve Los Angeles Int'l, New York JFK, and Fort Lauderdale Int'l in the United States using a pair of slots recently allocated to it by the French authorities for a proposed Oslo Gardermoen regional service.

According to the paper, the carrier had planned to supplement its existing Paris Orly regional European operations with flights to Los Angeles this summer but ultimately failed to secure the requisite slot allocations.

Norway pays about 1.8 billion Euro's per annum to the EU, so the EU also needs to give back.
They are the 10th largest contributor to the EU despite not being a member.

Two very recent pieces of news concerning Norwegian:

Norwegian Air Shuttle dispute with US regulators over its wish to fly more transatlantic routes will likely go to arbitration, said CEO Bjorn Kjos.

Norwegian pledged to locate 50 B787s (!) at London Gatwick if a second runway is built at the airport. Carrier also plans to base 100 short-haul planes at the West Sussex airport following expansion.

Norwegian signed an agreement to lease an additional two new B787-9s, on lease from AerCap (Netherlands). Both aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in 2018. With this new agreement, the carrier’s long-haul fleet will consist of 40 Dreamliners by 2020.

Norwegian also signed one-year contract with euroAtlantic Airways for one B767-300ER, serial 25535, to be available as replacement aircraft in the event of an AOG. The agreement is effective May 2016.

I don't understand all the fuss about Norwegian and I don't understand why it is followed on luchtzak.be.
On average since their creation, they have not been profitable with very poor ROI for investors. I really wonder who injected all the capital into them, but I think that there must be a lot of Norwegian State interests in there through constructions.

Sure, they have very ambitious growth plans, but I doubt that they will become more profitable.
There just ins't the focus that they need. They want to open a base in about every major city in Europe and operate mainline routes from there.

They have a lot of capital, so they can survive several years even with very ambitious growth plans and ensuing losses. Their business model is not sustainable, their load factors are too low and fares too high.
Their longhaul routes do not benefit from mass outside their Scandinavian bases. Also, the aircraft that they are using for longhaul don't have low enough unit cost for low cost operations and the C class is not good enough. Some Asian airlines have a Y+ hard product that is comparable.

It will be interesting to see whether they will survive the next financial crash and higher oil prices, if their unjustified big fleet expansion plans don't kill them first.

I am with Flanker, Norwegian will be one of the first victims of the next hick up in aviation (fuel price, economic downturn, war,...)
A massive overcapacity storm is building up in aviation, this will lead to a fare war. Norwegian with his massive debts and a huge order of aircraft with no money to pay for it won't survive.
EasyJet just announced their first summer base in PMI, others will probably follow. They are after Norwegian and Air Berlin.
EasyJet and Ryanair have enough money in the bank to fly their passengers around for free during a whole year, they are looking forward to soaring oil prices, during which they won't raise ticket prices. Airlines who, today, are still having their passengers paying a fuel surcharge (!), in order to post a modest profit, won't survive.
A pitty because Norwegian is offering a very nice product.

Norwegian to go long-haul from Barcelona in 2Q 2017

Norwegian has announced it will begin long haul operations out of Barcelona El Prat during summer of next year.

The LCC said in a statement that flights to Newark (4x weekly), Los Angeles Int'l (3x weekly); Oakland (3x weekly); and Fort Lauderdale Int'l (2x weekly), would commence effective June 5, 2017.

"The launch of direct flights between Barcelona and the United States is a new milestone for Norwegian," CEO Bjorn Kjos said. "Spain is an important market for us where we have been very well received since we launched here. Many Spaniards choose to fly Norwegian on domestic Spanish routes and routes to other parts of Europe. An increasing number of Americans also fly with us to Europe, and we look forward to welcoming even more travelers from both sides of the Atlantic."

Currently, Norwegian's operations at the Catalonian gateway include routes to Bergen, Berlin Schönefeld, Bilbao, Billund, Birmingham Int'l, Copenhagen Kastrup, Dubrovnik, Edinburgh, Gothenburg Landvetter, Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel, Helsinki Vantaa, Las Palmas, London Gatwick, Manchester Int'l, Oslo Gardermoen, Palma Son Sant Joan, Stavanger, Stockholm Arlanda, Tenerife Norte, Trondheim and Warsaw Chopin.

Norwegian has now four (!) IATA codes:

- DY Norwegian Air Shuttle (the original one)
- D8 Norwegian Air International

and the two newly filed:

- DH Norwegian Air Norway (!)
- DI Norwegian Air UK

Too much is too much, methinks.
