The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route," the source said.

The crash is confirmed: 116 dead (of which 40 French), no survivors. The crew were Spanish. RIP!
Burkina Faso transport minister says that AH5017 asked to change route at 0138 GMT because of a storm. It finally crashed in Tilemsi, Mali, at 70 km from Gao.

Doesn't seem another aircraft is reported missing .......
On the other hand, the met sat shows a big bad cell moving NE-SW in Mali but I could not go further back than 0730z. At that time it was about 200NM North of OUA.
Three hours before, at the time last contact is reported, this cell would have been in the area of Kidal, some 50NM West of the Gao - Tessalit Airway UG859.
Big sell currently spread between Mopti and Bobo Dioulasso.

Air Algerie says the aircraft's passenger list includes 50 people from France, 24 from Burkinabe, eight from Lebanon, four from Algeria and two from Luxembourg; one Belgian, one Swiss, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian, one Ukrainian and one Romanian.
Swiftair currently operates 4 MD-83. They are flying for Air Algérie, Thomas Cook and Vueling as additional summer capacity.

Re: BREAKING: crash in Taiwan kills 51
The Aviation Herald has just amended its report from Accident into Crash.
A Mirage aircraft from the French air force has located the aircraft.

Here's hoping that there could be survivors. It was at night, but it's the desert, and crash landings in the desert can be survivable if it was anything other than catastrophic structural failure.
I hope that they send out a few Pedro's very fast so that any injured survivors can be rescued fast.
I find that these things still take too much time for an era of self-proclaimed "technological high-point". It's almost 20 hours since the aircraft disappeared and only now the aircraft's crash site is located.

Media cites a storm as a possible cause.
That are than 2 passenger plains having crashed in a week because of weather conditions.
But ... Again in a region with a hot conflict ... No, I don't say that the airplane is shot down. But it will be difficult to do a thorough investigation because this is a rebel held region.

Re: Swiftair MD83 flying for Air Algérie missing
The Belgian victim is Dominique Guillaume, a woman in her fifties originally from the Namur region. She had discovered Burkina Faso in the early 2000s following a trip and had subsequently decided to settle in the country five years ago, in Ouagadougou, the capital of the country, to conduct a humanitarian mission to distribute drugs in villages. Active in the field of culture in the Namur region, she then opened a cultural center in a town near Ouagadougou. Thursday, she took the plane to come to visit her children, 2 boys and a girl, and her friends in Belgium. She never arrived...

Terrorism is not ruled out as a possible cause of the crash. Of the passengers, at least 33 were French military personnel, including three senior intelligence officials, and one was a Lebanese Hezbollah leader, who was disguised as a businessman. An Al Qaeda stronghold is located not far away from the crash site.

Re: Swiftair MD83 flying for Air Algérie crashed in Mali
The Cockpit Voice Recorder of AH5017 is unintelligible, says the head of France's BEA, brought in to support the Mali crash investigation. The recordings were successfully restored, however the recording is not usable due to damage to the CVR unrelated to the accident sequence.
Based on the Flight Data Recorder a first trajectory of the aircraft has been established. After a normal departure from Ouagadougou, the aircraft reached cruise FL310 at 01:37Z 22 minutes after departure with an airspeed of 280 knots at the time. Two minutes later the speed decreased gradually, the aircraft began to descend gradually, the speed continued to decrease to 160 knots. The aircraft subsequently began a left turn and descended rapidly with changes in pitch and angle of attack. The last position recorded by the FDR at 01:47:15Z was at 1600 feet MSL, about 380 KIAS and a very high rate of descent.
