Ryanair aims at being Belgium's largest airline in 2014.

BRU will grow from 19M to 20M passengers in 2014 thanks to Ryanair.

MOL had breakfast with A Feist this morning. Good atmosphere and cooperation from BRU staff. FR will be at gates but without bridges.

Currently most destinations are summer destinations. FR will look at new destinations for winter 2014.

More to follow.

Thanks for your updates! This is a great way to follow a press conference!

Maybe you can ask MOL how he sees his plans to fly transatlantic now that WestJet will link Dublin with Newfoundland (with a B737)?

If their BRU base is going to be a big hit, it will not be difficult for them to overtake SN which is not much bigger at this moment anyway.

Too late! I'm already back home.

Any way, here is a full report of the press conference held this morning at 0900 at the Radisson Blu hotel in Brussels.

The setting was unusual. At the previous press conference where he announced flights out of Brussels Airport, the room was to small, there was nothing to eat or drink. This time there was a better room, coffee, orange juice, croissants, etc. "All free, courtesy of Ryanair" trumpeted Michael O'Leary.

MOL started with saying he had a nice breakfast meeting with the CEO of Brussels Airport. The atmosphere was excellent and there was nice cooperation from the airport staff. Ryanair will dock at normal gates, but will not use the jet bridges. The aim is to have a turnaround in 25 minutes. However the taxi times at BRU will obviously be longer than at CRL.

The bookings for the BRU flights are excellent. FR has currently already a 25% load factor for the March flights and hopes to achieve 80%. There is a promotional fare of 17.99 euros for all BRU and CRL flights until tomorrow evening: this is below cost for the BRU flights (MOL confessed that he'll have to pay close to 30 euros airport fees). Extra flights might be necessary on some days and destinations to handle the forecast reservations. The best bookings are on LIS and FCO.

MOL announced that Ryanair would be the number one airline in Belgium in 2014, overtaking Brussels Airlines. In a graph, he showed no decrease in CRL (5.5 million pax) and 1.5 million pax in BRU, for a total of 6.5-7.0 million pax, this above the 5.8 million pax of SN. At the same time, the total number of passengers at BRU would increase from 19 to 20 million in 2014, thanks to Ryanair.

The current Ryanair destinations out of BRU are mostly summer destinations, thus Ryanair foresees to use some of its 4 aircraft based at BRU to serve new destinations in the winter of 2014. An announcement should be made in April or May.

Ryanair will introduce business packages in April: for a higher ticket price, business pax will get a fast track at selected airports, a reserved seat, free baggage allowance, free change of flights.

MOL was grilled about the contracts of pilots working as independents. He said that it was compliant with European law. When a base closes, like MST, the pilots (contractors) are offered to relocate in BRU or elsewhere or leave. Flexibility is needed in this business, and that's the way to achieve it. And he reminded journalists that they too are often contractors rather than employees.

The future staff based in Brussels will pay income taxes in Ireland and social security taxes in Belgium, in full compliance with EU law.

MOL would like to participate in the 19 million euros subsidy programme for Belgian airlines (and jokingly he considered SN as a German airline), and might therefore request a Belgian AOC for some aircraft.

Ryanair will not leave Charleroi, which it considers as one of its best and most profitable bases. At long term, FR aims at 7-10 million pax in CRL, and 3 million in BRU.

MOL also mentioned that Ryanair employs some 300 Belgian pilots, but not all of them are in Belgian bases.

He came all the way to Brussels to say that? Or did he come to tell BRU to behave publicly?

thanks for posting, andre.

Ryanair is increasingly showing the obvious signs of a company which is slowly put steadily pushed into the defensive, not just commercially and financially, but also politically by its many adversaries.

The good thing is it is trying very hard to fight back in order to catch up again and reconnect with the likes of vueling, easyjet and germanwings.

FWIW- a 25 percent loadfactor so shortly before they actually start from BRU doesnt look like a superb market entrance either, especially not if you have to start another sales campain at below cost: those launch tickets should long have been sold and thus be included in those 25 percent. The rather rushed way in which they "stumbled" into BRU is probably going to cost them quite some money over this summer, but then they had to react as they couldnt just let others take over from them.

Definitely interesting how the tide can turn quickly in this sector: I still maintain my position that they should accompany their much needed strategic reorientation with a name change and a managerial shake-up at the top in which the current CEO goes.

Here is a link to the factual account of the position Ryanair takes vs the new headwind faced by them:

Any news about Vueling bookings André?

In Sud Presse they say that CRL would become FR leisure base and BRU Business one.

New destinations in sept for both CRL and BRU:

I guess MAN and DUB could be the first Business routes moved to BRU?

the link you have provided us with refers to Eastern European destinations and Greece, crlhub.

Anyway, contrary to what sudinfo expected, nothing got announced today if Andre kept his ears open till the very end (could be in part because of the rather low loadfactors until now), but you seem to be the CRL specialist, so maybe you or somebody else could list all ryanair destinations and their frequencies from CRL so we can all make our best guess as to which ones are going to be transferred and dont have to rely on wrong information from ill informed journalists alone.

Of course we should also have somebody who can guide us through the availability of landing and departing slots as well as parking gates at BRU, because there are obviously bottle necks in the morning and late at night which may prevent real business route transfers as those need to leave and arrive in a very specific time frame to be considered interesting.

enjoy the project management task. :)

25% loadfactor in march (which together with february is the slowest period of the year) in the first month of operation is actually not that bad. Given that we still have more then a month to go and that a lot of our business passengers book last minute. As usual, inquirer tries to spin the info to make it look dramatic and negative. Sad affair

Great for RYR.
Great idea as well from BRU airport to offer gates to Ryanair which will not be used. Very efficient way of fucking up everything you have been claiming to stand for.
(Don't see EZY at the gates eh...)
I still am very curious about the slots MOL is looking for... has anyone found any actual data on this?

If I was an airport or handling CEO, I would never ever provide the lowest price for a service which includes the fastest turnaround times. Even not when it comes at the expense of bridges or other elements of the value proposition. Fastest turnaround = highest value for airline = highest price.

I predict that Brussels airport is going to pay a high price for providing this service to RYR. RYR were clearly well prepared: nobody seemed to welcome them wholeheartedly at BRU and yet for an external observer it seems everything went quite swiftly.

If only all airlines where this entrepreneurial!

Which airport will be the first to get Volotea and Norwegian?

Volotea is expanding very fast mainly from France:

Ryanair just announced its long awaited Lisbon base. 1 based aircraft to 4 new routes (MAN, DLE, MRS, PSA) as of April this year. Base number 65 for FR.

Could it be that MoL decided to fly to BRU because he either wants to "kill" or to get his share of the subsidies the Belgian (federal) government will be giving indirectly to airlines with more than 400,000 pax per year at BRU ? We know that MoL, in principle, only flyes to airports with subsidies
In favor of quality air travel.

One can be sure Vuelings decision to upgauge BRU played a role for FR deciding for BRU. It's not SN they're after, they're after Vueling.
