Norwegian Air Shuttle in 2012-2015

After so many depressing news from a lot of airlines, let's have a look at a carriers which seemingly is doing fairly well : Norwegian Air Shuttle.
( most of the following informations I have found in an article by Eryl Crump in "Airliner World" for april 2012, pp 90 - 97)

NAS is the third budget carrier in Europe : in 2011, NAS carried 16 million pax with 62 B737 on high-frequency domestic flights, regular flights to business destinations such as London, Amsterdam, Paris and lower frequency flights to leisure destinations. All the recent aircraft have good leg-room, reclining seats, and WiFi.

NAS plan to buy 22 more B737-800, 100 A320neos (deliveries from 2015) and 100 B737MAX (deliveries from 2017), plus options; aiming to operate 241 aircraft by 2022.

Bjorn Kjos, CEO : High costs and old aircraft are a dangerous mix. There is no way you can fly an old aeroplane and be economically viable, given where fuel prices are going.

Also on order : 6 787 Dreamliners for long-haul routes. NAS plan to base at least some of them in Asia : "If we are able to fly with the Dreamliner within our existing infrastructure, but with an Asian crew, we should be able to operate the aircraft at 50% of the cost to our competitors".

With the new services progressively added this year, Norwegian will offer over 300 routes connecting its bases in the Nordic region to destinations in 36 countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Perhaps to Brussels in a not too distant future ? Let's hope !

Norwegian has signed an agreement to lease two additional Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners for its future long-haul operations. The company has previously entered into agreements to purchase three and lease three aircraft of the same type, securing a delivery of a total of eight Dreamliners.

Norwegian confirms that it will launch twice-weekly long-haul flights from both Oslo and Stockholm to New York (from 31 May 2013) and Bangkok (from 20 June 2013) with its newly delivered Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the first of which Norwegian will receive in April 2013. These flights will become thrice-weekly after one month, when the second 787 will be delivered. A total of 8 Dreamliners have been ordered.

Continuing its tradition of decorating its planes with 'pioneers', the first 787 will feature Hollywood star, triple Olympic champion, philanthropist, art collector, and museum founder Sonia Henie.

A one-way ticket to New York was going for 999 Norwegian crowns ($170) on Wednesday until Norwegian's website crashed shortly after tickets went on sale.

Two new bases off Scandinavia, in 2013 : Gatwick and Alicante (third Spanish base after Malaga and Las Palmas).
Many new routes, including to France - but not yet to Belgium.
Let's hope it'll happen soon ! Norwegian Air Shuttle is a dynamic company, would be a sharp competitor for easyJet at Brussels.

Norwegian Air Shuttle plugs 787 gap with A340s

Norwegian Air Shuttle will launch its long-haul services with Airbus A340s to make up for delivery delays of its Boeing 787s.

The Scandinavian carrier will wet-lease two A340-300s from Portuguese leasing specialist Hi Fly to begin its planned services from Oslo to New York JFK on May 30 and to Bangkok on June 23.

Boeing had warned Norwegian last month that the first two 787s, due for delivery in April and June from lessor ILFC, might be delayed.

A bit late, but still, a thought...

what will we all be doing if "our" jobs are outsourced to SE Asia in order to fly cheaper to JFK, buy a cheaper chair at Ikea, or buy cheaper clothing at Massimo Dutti...

I mean: it's all fun and great upto the day it's YOUR job that's being "sacrificed" on the shrine of globalization in order to offer a cheaper service or product for the comsumers...

I'm worried, really...

Made a little check on the fares and I think you're in for an unpleasant surprise: just as Air Berlin, they're not much cheaper than the full service airlines. For a round trip to FLL / MIA around Xmas they were actually more expensive!

It has been said before: low cost on long haul... much more difficult than on short haul. There's a reason your friend MOL didn't start long haul yet... the fuel and airplane cost (same for all) are to big a part of the total cost structure...

If I were CRL, I wouldn't lengthen the runway for long haul...

That's why Norwegian has decided to base its long-haul crews at Bangkok, providing for a significant cost reduction on the crew element of the structure. But they'll do it only when they'll receive their 787s.

If I were CRL, I wouldn't lengthen the runway for long haul...

CRL is not only about low cost. There are some holiday flight as well, the length of the runway, is not enough to go to Egypt for example.

Also CRL is one of the fatest growing airport in Europe, they are ambitious and will not focus on low cost only so lengthen the runway makes sense.
