The European Union will support with over €1 million from the TEN-T Programme a series of studies that will lead to the realisation of an intermodal platform at Liège’s airport in Belgium in order to seamlessly move freight between road, rail and air.
The project, which was selected for funding under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, will be realised by Liège CAREX, a body part of a broad network (Euro CAREX) which includes Lyon, Paris, London and Amsterdam and aims to improve intermodal transport and, in particular, to shift freight from air and road to rail mode.
Within the coordinated scope of Euro CAREX, Liège CAREX aims to carry out the construction of a trimodal railport (air, rail, road). This will constitute a link in the future European express rail freight network: travelling on the high speed lines and offering a viable alternative to the short-distance intra-European flights and to express road freight.
The studies will cover all the technical and financial aspects, which will create the basis for the future construction works of the Liège Railport. With this project, Liège takes a lead role in the Euro CAREX Network, by being the first site to propose the finalisation of the studies and the concrete implementation of the intermodal terminal.
The project will be managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency and is set to be completed by November 2014.

According to La Libre Belgique, the management of Liege Airport is trying to attract Fedex as a new customer in response to a possible relication of TNT express to Cologne Airport .
They also show some interesting stats in the video : 580.000 tonnes for 2012 : meaning a decrease of 14%.
That's quite bad, but to be honest I expected even worse...

BRU's latest YTD numbers (January-November) showed relative ok numbers with -1,9% (growth in the first half of the year, decline in the second half).
Belgian Cockpit Association, Beca, is again warning everyone about the big threat there is for Belgian/European pilots. They are afraid that American pilots find a way to fly within Europe and thus kill the European jobs in Liège and elsewhere.

"José Happart, président de Liege Airport, et Luc Partoune, directeur général de l'aéroport régional liégeois, vont envoyer un courrier au secrétaire d'Etat à la Mobilité, Melchior Wathelet (CDH) afin de dénoncer l'attitude du ministre des Pensions, Alexander De Croo (Open VLD), et de Belgocontrol qui tentent de rendre responsables les aéroports de Liège et Charleroi du déficit cumulé ces dernières années à Belgocontrol et de les faire participer à son remboursement. Du côté de Liege Airport, si on reconnaît qu'il est nécessaire de procéder à un réajustement du mode de fonctionner et de facturer à Belgocontrol, on ajoute que chaque année la Wallonie verse 6,6 millions d'euros à Belgocontrol alors qu'Ostende et Anvers ne versent rien. Les Liégeois accusent la gestion de Belgocontrol et la décision du fédéral de ne pas indexer les redevances à Zaventem et ce, pour venir en aide à Brussels Airlines."

First 97 hectares for 9 millions euro, then 22 more hectares for 4,5 millions euro.
On the other hand, the mgmt of Liège airport clearly announced that they will NOT have anything positive this year. No new client, nothing new.
So even if they had all the nevada desert, without new clients, it is an expensive potatoe field.

This is not what I would call a "friendly" price ! But what else could we expect from Zarte Piet.
The field is not even good for growing potatoes. As you may know, large portion of the military compound is highly polluted by all sorts of aromatic :benzene, octane, butene, heavy metals: As, Cd, Mo, Pb and you name it.
Several hundreds of drilling have shows pollution at more than 10 Mt...not far from the water table.
More than 500.000 M3 are subject to removal and treatment this year.
As you see, steel industry is not the only environmental burden in the area.
As far as the near future is concerned, I very much prefer when Happart keeps a low profile rather than continuously telling bulls****. Better a good surprise than wishful thinking !
Belgium’s Liege Airport saw its cargo volumes decrease by 14.5 percent to 576,664 tonnes in 2012. Blaming weak European markets, the airport said it had handled fewer charter flights during the year, with a significant reduction in activity by Southern Air.
This was partly offset by a number of new cargo operators calling at Liege. Turkey’s ACT My Cargo launched five flights per week to Istanbul in September. Niger Air Cargo is developing a scheduled service to Niamey, while Avient is flying direct to Brazzaville and has introduced a regular schedule to Yerevan in Armenia and the Caspian region.
Emirates Skycargo is now stopping in Liege three times a week en route from Dubai to New York JFK, while Israel’s CAL Cargo Airlines and TNT have both increased their frequencies to JFK.
Ethiopian Airlines, meanwhile, has upgraded its freighter fleet with two B777Fs which operate daily to Liege.
The airport continues to develop its infrastructure. “It is our firm intention to remain Belgium’s biggest airfreight hub, the eighth largest cargo airport in Europe, and the second in terms of a full 24/7 operation,” says cargo sales manager Eric Gysen.
“We believe that the economic climate for our partners and for Liege Airport itself will improve in 2013 thanks to our mutual focus on cost-cutting and time-savings, and investment in diversifying our activities and services,” he adds.
A new 6,500-square-meter business center opened on Liege Airport Business Park in October and all office space has been taken up, a year ahead of the initial schedule.
A further 2,000-square-meter office building, designed mainly for logistics businesses, will open in the north cargo zone in April as part of a €10 million ($13.52 million) investment which also includes a new freight handling area and border inspection post.
Some 100,000 square meters of space is available to build warehouses with airside access. Second-line development is also under way, and in the medium term, front-line and second-line space is set to triple to 600,000 square meters.
The ultimate development plan for Liege extends much wider, with around 350 ha (865 acres) of economic zones under consideration. The airport will offer a multimodal connection by linking direct to the planned high-speed Freight TGV rail line from Paris to Brussels and Cologne.

Is there a way to find arrival / departure schedules for cargo aircraft ? If I'm not mistaken, this info was displayed here on this site in the past and http://www.liegeairport.com only show pax scheduled flights... Thanks !
