Brussels Airport: monthly figures 2010

I can give pure, dry figures every month and nothing more. But then you don't know why the figures are bad or good. That's why I put also the official comments to this.

Key Points:
 Total traffic for September was 4.1% higher than the pcp, primarily as a result of good
performance by long haul carriers, as well as a strong growth on a number of short
haul routes operated by both full service and low cost carriers. The strong growth has
been partially offset by flight cancellations due to a non-union supported strike by
Belgocontrol (the Belgian airspace control agency) which caused the closure of Belgian
airspace for several house on 28 September 2010. Underlying traffic growth,
excluding the effect of the strike, is estimated at 6.4%.
 Extra-EU traffic was 10.8% above the pcp. The strong performance in the segment
was driven predominantly by the continuing effect of the launch of new long haul
services by Brussels Airlines facilitated by introduction of their fifth Airbus A330, as
well as new routes to Chicago (United Airlines), Montreal (Air Canada) and Shanghai
(Hainan Airlines). In addition, most carriers continued to experience higher load
factors.
 Intra-EU traffic was 0.5% above the pcp. This growth reflects continuing traffic
recovery from a number of full service carriers operating on short haul routes and
ongoing growth in the low cost segment. In both cases, growth has been driven by
strong load factors and the introduction of additional services. Traffic growth in this
segment was most affected by the Belgocontrol strike which coincided with a period in
the daily schedule with a high proportion of intra-EU services.
 In September Ukraine International Airlines has resumed its five weekly service to Kiev
and Middle East Airlines have decided to continue operating their three weekly service
to Beirut through the winter season. Recently Brussels Airport welcomed further new
route announcements to Liverpool by easyJet (six weekly from February 2011), as well
as Bern and Angers by Skyworks Airlines (four weekly from February 2011).

PAX


In September, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.690.000 pax or an increase with +4,1% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Extra-EU was again driving by long haul ops of the current players, higher load factor, and new destinations as Montreal, Shanghai, Chicago and the four new African destinations.

Intra-EU was performing well in the LC-segment and multiple SN destinations. Charter flights was again doing bad.

Extra-EU: 625.000 pax: +10,8%


CARGO

In September, BRUcargo handled 37.583 tons of cargo or an increase with +6,8% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Saudi Arabian cancelled again a number of cargo flights but less then previous months. As I mentioned in an other post, SIA and BR are re-install again the normal schedule.

Full freighter: -4%
Integrator: -2%
Cargo on pax: +42%


MOVEMENTS

In September there were 20.495 movements on the airport or a decrease with -2,4% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

No was not mentioned till now. You can also find this information in the new BRU timetable.

We already knew that they were looking at BRU but till today no slots were asked. BTW information given by MAp and BRU is a contradiction. MAp says that they are going to fly to BRU in December 2010, which is in a couple of weeks. BRU says that they are going to start in Q1 of 2011, which sounds more logical.

OCTOBER

PAX

In October, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.620.000 pax or an increase with +8,1% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Intra-EU: 1.001.000 pax: +5,7%
Extra-EU: 619.000 pax: +12,2%
T&T: transfer & transit: 123.000 pax: +25,8%

Those figures are remarquable. Especially LC and some pure business routes are doing very well on the Intra-EU.
The total number of pax, 1.620.000, is realy good. We have to ga back to 2007 and 2000 to find better figures. The big increase wasn't even started yet. November sees a lot more flights.


CARGO

In October, BruCargo and Brussels Airport handled 42.500 ton of cargo or an increase with +9,7% when we compare this with the same month last year.

full freighter: +8,9%
integrator: -2,5%
cargo on pax: +23,5%

Full freighter was nearly back on schedule, Korean, Saudi and Singapore resume their normal schedule.
TNT was cancelling some cargo flights.


MOVEMENTS

In October there were 20.705 movements on the airport or an increase with +3% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Brussels 6.6% increase on pcp

Intra-EU 4.3% increase on pcp

Extra-EU 10.5% increase on pcp

PAX

In November, Brussels Airport handled 1.323.000 pax or an increase with +6,6% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

With the beginning of the Winter schedule a lot of airlines increased their presence at the airport.
Air Arabia is a whole new LCC with flights to Fez and Casablanca and this with an A320.
Jetairfly started up a new destination to La Romana, Male and Colombo
Egyptair, Lufthansa, Cyprus Airlines, Aer Lingus, Vueling and SN increased their number of frequencies.

Extra-EU: 511.000 pax: +10,5%
T&T: 88.000: +20,7%


CARGO

In November, BruCargo and Brussels Airport handled 40.838 ton of cargo or and increase with +3,7% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Cargo on full freighter and cargo on pax increased while cargo on integrator decreased slightly. DHL started new flights to Baghrein, Madrid and Barcelona. TNT cancelled some cargo flights during November.

In November there were 18.492 movements on the airport or an increase with +4,1% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

If you have a look at the departing and the Departing T&T then you will see a difference.

Departing: 545.000 pax: +3% -> refer specifically to Originating pax. Originating pax are those passengers whose initial point of departure is Brussels Airport. This is already calculated in the Intra and Extra EU figures.

Departing T&T: 88.000 pax: +20,7% -> refer to Transit and Transfer pax whose initial point of air was not Brussels Airport. They are using Brussels Airport as a stopover.

It is that specific point that I gave every month. Below an extract from the Map figures.

DECEMBER


PAX

Brussels Airport welcomed 1.178.000 pax or an increase with +3,6% when we compare this with the same month of last year. This figure is lower then previous months but was caused due to severe weather conditions. Many cancellations as several European airports were closed.

Intra-EU: 708.000 pax: +1,6%
Extra-EU: 470.000 pax: +6,9%
T&T: 103.000 pax: +20%


CARGO

In December, Brucargo and Brussels Airport handled 39.300 ton of cargo or an increase with +2,2% when we compare this with the same month of last year.


MOVEMENTS

In December there were 16.649 movements on the airport or an increase with +3,3% when we compare this with the same month of last year.


In general we can say that for December the figures are not brillant but bad either. Brussels Airport was an operational airport during the severe weather conditions while other European airport were closed.
You could see this very well in the figures. Intra-EU was weak and Extra-EU was strong because both point to point airports were operational.
Movements were again up and this for a part due to the diversions to Brussels Airport (minor part).

PAX

Brussels Airport welcomed in 2010 17.181.000 pax or an increase with +1,1% when we compare this with 2009.

Four major issues are responsible for this slight increase.

1) Ash cloud in April: was responsible that Brussels Airport was closed for 5 days and lost 400.000 pax in that entire month. Crews and planes were not on the right places. It was an operational chaos.

2) Charters: Brussels Airport lost a lot of pax to CRL and this due to Jetairfly. This company opened a few new routes ex-CRL to destinations in Europe. But the charter market in general was very weak in 2010.

3) Brussels Airlines: opened in 2010 4 new destinations with one long haul airplane. Load on certain routes was very low. Thanks to their Star Alliance membership they could attract some transit pax.

4) severe weather conditions in December: the airport was open but many European airports were closed.

When we compare from 2000 to 2010 then we saw that 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2008 were better years.


CARGO

Brucargo and Brussels Airport handled in 2010 476.127 ton of cargo or an increase with +6% when we compare this with 2009.

A lot of full freighters cancelled their flights during 2010 but re-scheduled them a few hours later or one day later.
Egyptair cargo is a new cargo carrier in 2010.
ACE: Aryan Cargo Express flew a few ad hoc cargo flights but a scheduled cargo timetable was blocked due to third party.
Since May 2010 cargo increased again and this due to cargo carried on pax flights and full freigher.
Cargo via Integrator decreased unless DHL opened some new European cargo destinations ex-BRU and long haul destinations with a combination of the B744 of Kalitta and the B777.

Full freighter: 239.000 ton: +6%
Integrator: 108.000: -12%
cargo on pax: 129.000: +29%


MOVEMENTS

In 2010 there were 225.682 movements on the airport or a decrease with -2,6% when we compare this with 2009.

A decrease in movements is not always bad. This means that airlines are using their equipment or timetabel on an efficient way. There are also more pax on all these flights.


At first sight 2011 looks bright with new carriers and routes. Frequencies goes up by a number of airlines.
A total invest plan 2011 - 2016 is now set on 400 million euro.
