Brussels Airport: monthly figures 2010

Any idea why ? Is it a belgian/brussels problem ?
Is it seasonal ?
Other airport in Europe seem to recover a bit.

It's not that simple to explain it in a few sentences why there is a huge drop in cargo. It's not seasonal for sure. Other major airports have much more better figures.

Not correct. Which cargo carrier moved to LGG: Ethiopian cargo. Africa West cargo is still flying from BRU.

Slightly offtopic, but will Brucargo be served by rail as well when Diabolo will be opened up for service? It could be a huge incentive to consolidate excisting cargo carriers and lure others to the airport...

In the very first plan of Diabolo there was an idea for a cargo rail with a final stop/start at Brucargo. But this is not the case anymore. They want to attract pax - a lot of pax - via this new link.

Ethiopian left BRU in june 2008, so there is no reason to talk about it in the 2010 vs 2009 numbers.
Regarding Africa west, I don't know exactly what's happening, they fly from liege, and truck good from BRU to LGG ? but it's only a very small tonnage, so it's almost irrelevant.
In fact, LGG has nothig to do with the decline on BRU in the last 12 months.

Does anyone know what SQCs long term plans at BRU are? If I look at the schedules for Summer 2010 I get the impression that they are downsizing BRU for Summer 2010.

BTW any reason why the BRU webstite doesn't show any scheduled KE flight for Summer 2010? One would think their schedule would be known by now.

Ethiopian left BRU in june 2008, so there is no reason to talk about it in the 2010 vs 2009 numbers.

I only gave an answer on the question of Philippepompier. It was a regular question, not a specific one about the figures February 2010.

Africa West is still flying from BRU, but not on a regular basis anymore. They serve one single destination ex-BRU. The destination they serve ex-LGG is Libreville but also not on a regular basis.
Africa West is a very small player and is not knowing which airport to chose.

Don't count on the BRU cargo timetable. This is far from up to date and this for years. I don't know why they don't care about it.

Hard to say what their long term plans are because long term doesn't excist in aviation. But fact is that they want to create a one single European hub. Since two years they are downsizing their ops at BRU. The time that we could see 3 to 4 B744 in one day of SQ are over.
They have now at least 2 European hubs with almost the same destinations and that's too much.

Also some nice things mentionned in the Newsletter:
-Egyptair is planning to fly up to 6 weekly starting in November and daily from 2011.
- Corendon starting a new holiday destination (Ercan- Turkey), 1 weekly between 19 June and 31 August
- AnadoluJet will take over the TK flights between BRU and Ankara (but I think everyone knew this already)
- Aryan Cargo Express wants to fly up to 3 weekly flights and upgrading from A310 to MD11 in the second half of the year.
- The several Korean Cargo charters to Navoi will be continued for the time being

In March, Brussels Airport handled 1.279.000 pax or an increase with +1,4% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Intra-EU is still showing not that good figures. Several airlines has increased their capacity but due to other facts like strikes (BA/LH and European Air Traffic) has their impact on this segment.

Extra-EU is still the drive. All American airlines are showing good figures such like Jet Airways, Etihad, Hainan and Brussels Airlines.

Intra-EU: 808.000 pax: -1,7% decrease
Extra-EU: 471.000 pax: +7,1% increase


CARGO

In March, Brucargo handled 49.800 ton of cargo or an increase with +18,4% when we compare this with the same month of last year. This is on count of Korean Air Cargo. They organised more then 30 military charters.

Integrators: -18% decrease: DHL is flying less and less from BRU.
Full freighters: +32% increase
cargo on pax: +45% increase


MOVEMENTS

In March there were 19.212 movements on the airport or a decrease with -4,6% when we compare this with the same month last year. This on both sides, pax and cargo.

In April Brussels Airport welcomed 1.171.000 pax or a decrease with -23% when we compare this with the same month last year. This was due to the 5 days closure of the airport caused by the ash cloud.


Intra-EU: 700.000 pax: -27,4%
Extra-EU: 471.000 pax: -15,3%

Intra-EU is still very weak not only due to the ash cloud but is still showing negative figures during the year.
Extra-EU, most long haul carriers perform very well.


MOVEMENTS

In April there were 15.718 movements on the airport or a decrease with -20,23% when we compare this with the same month last year.

During April, BruCargo handled 35.400 ton of cargo or a decrease with -3,1% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Full freighter: +10%
Cargo on pax: +14%
Integrator: is still decreasing because of less and less long haul cargo who feeds the DHL flights.

There are still some problems with ACE and Egyptair with their start-up at Brussels Airport.

The following from the ACE website doesn't look promising for BRU.

ACE in the process of obtaining slots for eight destination airports initially, including Japan, Thailand, the UAE and Italy. ACE expects to get the clearances for China and Hong Kong airports by mid-April, which will enable us to launch our first scheduled international service.

Anyway, they should have 3 A310s by now. However, I can't find any press release that these A310s are actually flying (and one would assume that when a company has its first flight it would celebrate this by numerous press releases). My view is that ACE hasn't started yet, though there is a photo of one of the A310s at Sharjah.

Not to be negative about BRU's cargo outlook, but if you compare BRU to its surrounding airports, BRU is falling behind. BRU still doesn't have any full cargo link to China and SQ seems to reduce flights from BRU in favour of AMS.

Furthermore, BRU's April numbers include the few military charters KE did in the first week of April. Without these charters the numbers would look worse. Any new cargo airline is thus welcome (and to be honest for cargo any airline operating a 3 weekly full cargo flight would be a significant increase in cargo) .

The problems with ACE and Egyptair are third party problems not those of Brussels Airport or one of the airlines.
BTW ACE was flying for a month ad hoc flights from India to BRU and the loads were realy impressive.

Saying that both cargo airlines not representing some important traffic is not true.

ACE: three flights a week with A310F and as from the summer MD11F
Egyptair cargo: European hub at BRU with two daily A300.

If you call that not important traffic...

In May, Brussels Airport received 1.573.000 pax or an increase with +1,9% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

This is remarcable because of Intra-EU is decreasing again while Extra-EU traffic is flying high figures. Main factor of the decrease in Intra-EU traffic are the strikes of British Airways and low loads in charters.

Intra-EU: 994.000 pax: -1%
Extra-EU: 580.000 pax: +7,2%

Both Brussels Airlines as the LCC were growing during this month.


CARGO

In May, BruCargo handled 41.700 ton of cargo or an increase with +17,1% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

full freighter: +17%
cargo on pax flights: +33%
integrator: -11%


MOVEMENTS

In May there were 20.195 movements on the airport or a decrease with -2,8% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

In June, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.590.000 pax or an increase with +1,6% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Intra-EU: 1.002.000 pax: -1,3%
Extra-EU: 587.000 pax: +7%

Intra-EU was again showing negative figures because of the strike of BA and strikes in Greece. The bankruptcy of SkyEurope is also in these figures.

Extra-EU was driven due to the strong performance of all US carriers, Jet Airways and Brussels Airlines (Africa)
In Juni Icelandair (2x), Air Canada (Daily) and MEA started up new routes to BRU. Air Canada was starting up mid-June and MEA end of June. This will affect the July figures


CARGO


In June, Brucargo handled 36.700 ton of cargo or an increase with +5,4% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Full freighter: +4%
Integrator: -15%
Cargo on pax flights: +36%

Full freighter is again doing a good job. Egyptair is now also flying more to BRU with flights ex-Caïro and Manston. Goal is to have daily flights and more in the future.
PS: cargo by truck (not in these figures) was 27.000 ton!

Cargo on pax flights is huge due to the new long haul destinations and more cargo on excisting long haul destinations.


MOVEMENTS

In June there were 20.704 movements on the airport or a decrease with -1,9% due to less long haul cargo destinations of DHL, strikes of BA and in Greece.
