• Total traffic for January was 1.8% higher than the pcp. This result was again affected by unusually heavy snowfalls experienced across northern Europe, which resulted in the delay and cancellation of some flights.

• Extra-EU traffic was 7.6% above the pcp. Long haul continues to drive this performance, benefitting from very high Jet Airways’ load factors, increases in load factors and capacity from Etihad and improved performance from the American carriers. Brussels Airlines also flew 10% more passengers on its long haul network than in the pcp.

• Intra-EU traffic was 1.7% lower than the pcp. Brussels Airlines maintained its recent growth, increasing passengers by almost 7%. In addition, easyJet benefitted from additional passengers on the new Lyon route and extra frequencies to other destinations. However, overall intra-EU traffic is down due to the ongoing impact of Sky Europe’s bankruptcy in September 2009 and lower traffic from the European network carriers.

• Brussels Airlines has announced the introduction of a fifth Airbus A330 into its fleet from summer 2010. With new destinations in Africa still to be announced, this will increase the size of Brussels Airport’s long haul network to its largest since 2000.

• New services have also been announced by Hainan Airways (to Shanghai), Middle East Airlines (Beirut), Thomas Cook (Oujda) and Corendon Airlines (Turkish destinations).

Brussels Airlines is on the good way, +10% for long haul and +7% for European network, that's not bad altough January 2009 was a very very bad month. But still it's not bad.
And it's nice to hear that the long haul network for this summer will be at its largest since 2000.

Cargo : 36.000 tons (-1.5% from JAN 2009).

Quite a bad result when you know that JAN 2009 was a very bad month already.

A good news is freight on pax flight : +40%

Well I was indeed planning to start up a new topic about the Brussels Airport figures 2010 but I saw it was already done. I received several PM to start up a new topic with all figures in one post.
I don't know if it is still possible but putting the figures by several members is a little bit crazy I think. That's why I was stil not involved in this topic.

Do you think you can post official numbers at the same time or even before other source ?
If you achieve that, you'll be the first every time (pretty much like last year) and everything will be great.

The gentlemen agreement will say that we don't post any figures before the officials did. Most of the figures are known around 15th of every month.

But about the figures about movements (second source), Belgocontrol is always rather late with his figures.

But we can say that we can post the figures, in the future, around the 25th of every month. Most of them are then published.

It's only a proposal.

Like I said this week, all info is available around the 25th of every month. And here they are.
Here are now all figures.

JANUARY

PAX

In January, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.035.000 pax or an increase with +1,8% when we compare this with the same month last year. This is the first increase in months.

Intra-EU: 621.000 pax: -1,7%
Extra-EU: 414.000 pax: +7,6%


But, keep in mind that there were severe winter conditions during the whole month of January. This caused that several flights were cancelled.

The Extra-EU flights did a really good job thanks to the very high loads on the Jet Airways flights (was still flying their B777 to BRU), Etihad and improved performances of the American carriers


CARGO

In January, Brussels Airport (Brucargo) handled 36.100 ton of cargo or a decrease with -1,5% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

This was due to Cargo B and a lot of cancellations by other cargo carriers during this month.
A positive note is that cargo on bellies increased with 40% and this because of the use of bigger aircrafts.


MOVEMENTS

In January there were 16.678 movements on the airport or a decrease with -3,9% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Again, most of this was due to the severe weather conditions during that month.

I hope the numbers for february will be possitive to. Because also this month we had snow and some strikes in Europe (LH, France, Greece), buth I think we had a good holiday start/end with more passengers than in 2009.
I'm curious to the numbers for the second half of the year, from June/July all the new routes (especially long haul) will be started.

Normally figures will be good, especially Extra-EU. Those will see more routes and new carriers.
Intra-EU is allways uncertain. SN will increase and we will also see some new carriers but other, small, carriers stopped flying BRU.

This summer we will not see a huge increase of new holiday destinations by leisure carriers. And this segment is also very important at the airport.

Do you reallised Cargo B was still allive in February 2009. The cargo on pax airplanes is rising enormous and the cargo on most other cargo carriers is not that much down either.

FEBRUARY

PAX

In February, Brussels Airport received 1.079.000 pax or an increase with 4,9% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Intra-EU: 680.000 pax: +1,4%
Extra-EU: 398.000 pax: +11,6%

The increase on Intra-EU flights was driven by Brussels Airlines and Easyjet (new flight to Lyon and increasing on excisting flights).
The increase on Extra-EU flights was driven by the main carriers we already known for a long time: those are Brussels Airlines, Etihad, Jet Airways and the American carriers who have increased their capacity.


CARGO

In February, Brussels Airport (Brucargo) handled 35.248 ton of cargo. This is a decrease with 8,1% when we compare this with the same month last year.

This is not only due to de demise of Cargo B but also of the huge number of cancellations by the main users during this month. Saudi Arabian Cargo cancelled almost 40 - 45% of its cargo flights. Also Singapore Airlines and Royal Jordanian Cargo cancelled a lot of flights.
Also the load factor is not high on certain days/routes/cargo operators.

... and more cargo gets trucked to other airports to take a flight from there. Due to the shufling in the networks of some cargo airlines and/or reduction of the capacity to/from Europe.

Slightly offtopic, but will Brucargo be served by rail as well when Diabolo will be opened up for service? It could be a huge incentive to consolidate excisting cargo carriers and lure others to the airport...

Brucargo is not a member of Eurocarex iirc, but they could develop something on their own I guess
