The Belgian Air Force has chartered numerous times an ADB AN124 for various long haul missions.

These AN124s were always loaded at Melsbroek. The fact that an AN124 was called in, suggests that there was a need for a substantial payload and that the AN124 also departed with this payload.

I remember a C-5 being parked at Melsbroek during the late Eighties.

I think that also the Japan Air Force B744s were parked at Melsbroek a few years ago.

Why would there now be a problem with an A330, while in the past we have seen other heavies passing through Melsbroek seemingly without causing any problems?

That must have been Crembo's sergeant, Dirk De Smul (or called De Smurf by some ;) ).

I would say more. I tought that there were two Japan B744 at the same time at Melsbroek but I don't think they were fully loaded. One was a back up aircraft.

BTW when was the tarmac renewed at Melsbroek? I can't remember me that.

The minister stated already that the A330 would not necessarely been based permanently at Melsbroek.

But besides of maintenance? I suppose that there are sometimes other reasons to put the airplane in the hangar. Loading or discharging of sensitive material ( weather conditions, security ), people,...

The weight is not an issue, not now, not in the past not in the future. The Melsbroek tarmac can handle weights which exceedes twice the MTOW of the A333.

The only issue left is the hangar. I don't now if the wingspan will fit the hanger but if it does fit there isn't a problem either... The hangar was allready to small for the A310's which didn't fit in the hangar either...

So in the end maybe they had better leased a A321 or so... No weight issues, no length or width issues, all problems solved... OK, maybe it's only a short/medium haul with insufficient cargo capacity but at least everybody would be happy... Or not... Because then there would be issues concerning the range, the capacity etc...

Conclusion: It doesn't matter which plane is bought/leased or rented, there will be always a problem with it ;)

I guess you just wrapped it up in one sentence: some decisions will just never be ok...actually: what are we fundamentally discussing about?! What is the worst thing that could happen and how much better would the best alternative be? Enough said: it will be a A333, period

It is indeed a shortsighted decision, but it also creates a window of opportunity for both the army and the airport to relocate the military airport to a 'better' place.

This would create extra space for airport development, such as a large General Aviation airport, a second zone of expansion for Brucargo etc.

No need to expand Brucargo to that side because Brucargo West is the main goal.

Like I have said years ago. In a modern time there is no place for militairy activities on a modern airport.
If they want a LCT on the airport, that's the right place to put one + a parking lot for them.

The "new" Airbus is scheduled to fly to BRU from AMS on the 22nd of October:

STD 2200 Lt. on 22/10 to BRU

I'll be in Dallas then, so it would be nice if there are spotters kind enough to make some pics from it?

Strange, these "Belgian Air Force" titles. Wasn't that changed into "Air component of the Belgian Armed Forces" or some such gibberish a couple of years ago? Let us hope the rest of the plane is more up to date...

I agree with Jan Olieslagers... What's the deal with "Belgian Air Force"?? :s
I thought that the Falcons sported Defence or something like that...

Also, does anyone have an idea if the tail will remain dull blue or will it at least receive the Belgian flag or the Royal Emblem as the A310's/ EMB's and Falcons have....?
